    Summer tire in winter question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I posted this in the wheel and tire section, but it doesn't get much play. Is it ok to leave my goodyear eagle f1's on in cold temperatures (high 20s-low 30's) until I get snow tires? Does it effect rain stopping power in low 40's high 30s?

    Thanks!

Re: Summer tire in winter question

last winter i took my car out once with the summer tires on (bf goodrich gsport) and i almost hit a guardraid going down my hill... the tire compound doesnt ever heat up and get soft enough to grip the road. so it is defiently not recommended. Sure you can drive it in the rain, the tires def will not grip as well as they would in a warmer environment. Hopefully someone with these tires will respond to give you a better understanding of how they will react to the weather, this is just by going off of my experience with a different brand... good luck

Eagle F1 GSD3's? Don't even think about it.. I just took mine off since the temps are getting low here in MD and I don't want to get caught out one day.

They will be ok in the colder weather, and in the rain. Just avoid snow and ice.

Depends how much you suck at driving, I drove in blowing snow and 20 degrees with Toyo T1R's and didn't have issues.

Summer tires in blowing snow...AWESOME idea

It doesn't have anything to do with your ability to drive. If you don't have traction, you don't have traction. Can you update your location in your profile so I know WHERE not be this winter?

I didn't have an other option, bought the car in Maine, his a winter storm in Southern Canada, northern MI, had to drive through it, had not issues. Also some it does have to do with the ability to drive in bad weather.

I'm putting snow tires on in the next week or two, I was just wondering how I would be until then. Temps will be high: mid 50's, low mid 30's. I'm in Massachusetts and rhode island.

Whateverdude...You had a choice to not drive the car...I hope you're a better driver than spellerIs this an S4 we're talking about? These cars have so much low end torque that even the slightest bit of snow and the wrong tires can make for a bad day.

It's not ideal, but you'll be fine. Just make sure you avoid any snow or ice. I'm still rockin my summers. 50's is ok, but when it's 30 at night, you have to be careful because the tires turn into hockey pucks. So just take it easy and be aware that your tires might not have the grip they usually do. I'll probably be putting on my winters within the next week or two since it doesn't seem like we'll have any more warmish days.

Thanks I think you're the first to rep me, haha.

IIRC the manufacturer usually states the min temp either in their technical documents about the tire, or on the tire itself. I think my sumitomo's are around 40-50 degrees. I'm not 100% sure though. I can't seem to find the info now so I might be mistaken.

Re: Summer tire in winter question

Some Summer Tire rubber compounds don't like the cold weather - Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s are one such tire. I left work on Monday and the tires skipped/hopped as I turned out of the parking spot. That's my signal to change to my all-seasons! I would avoid using summer tires in the winter if at all possible.

Re: Summer tire in winter question

The main issue is rubber compound, not tread pattern. Rough rule of thumb: summer = 110 to 60; all-season =70 to -10; winter = 40 to -30. If it gets hotter than those ranges the tires get too soft and if it gets colder they get too hard. Plus or minus 10 or even 20 degrees is not deadly, but should be noticed. However, going significantly outside those ranges is a bad idea. Of course different tire brands have their own ranges.

How does this translate into reality? Well, pushing a winter tire in 90+ degree weather is like driving on grease. Chunks of rubber will be peeling off and the tire will feel very slippery and unpredictable. Driving like that for too long will likely kill the tire prematurely. Does this mean you cannot drive during an extra warm winter day? No, of course you can drive – just be gentle and do not overwork the tire in the twisties. On the other hand, running a summer tire in 20 degree weather is like driving on rocks. Ever played with toy cars that had plastic wheels/tires? It’s just like that. If it is cold enough and you push too hard, you can spinout even if it is totally dry. So the colder it gets the slower you should drive. If the ground is wet (rain or morning dew), you should take extra caution. In snow and ice you will have a really tough time controlling the car. If it gets too cold you can crack the rubber – usually sidewalls, which will prematurely kill the tire.

So get your winter tires soon. I recommend RSi.

Re: Summer tire in winter question

I was running Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s on my stockers when I 1st bought my car. The lost grip was noticeable as the temps got colder. Then I was out driving in a snow flurry. The roads were barely covered & handling was a nightmare. Soon after I bought some snow tires for the stock Avus' & got some RS4 reps for summer tires. Best move I ever made.

    neo-gens?
I live in Colorado, and have them they work great in the snow and in the summer, maybe you guys should come out here and learn a thing or two about winter and winter driving. you lower the pressure for more traction, why ?!?! more surface area on the ground.

There is something wrong with you if you can see the ice and you try driving at a high rate of speed on it, black ice is the killer!

Ive had two sets of neogens and i dont have one bad thing to say about them. they are good at the track and up I 70 in the middle of january

You guys are talking the same way about snow and winter as my grandma! Ill tell you what, Ive driven my v8 stang with 4.10 rear end gears (3300rpm at 75mph 5th gear lol) up into the mountains more than a few times in my high school days, and lived to tell the tale. Try driving one of those and you wont sound like a spoiled little girl, and maybe youll realize these cars have a winter package for a reason!!!!! of course your 1" or less lo pros suck dick in the snow hahaha

ITS ALL ABOUT THE DRIVER!!!!!!!!!!!! dont kid yourself

all you east coast bitches dont know shit about winter lol
BTW blizzacks are stupid they arent even z rated!

hmm I honestly do not see how you came to that conclusion, because I actually have to deal with snow on daily? or because I just stated its all about the driver?

well either way I have put too many thousands of dollars into this money pit, to go wreck it, and boy this aint my first go around for winter, like i said ive driven everything from a honda, mustang, f150 yukon, s4, wrx, and 4 runner personally up to the resorts, and yes every single one of them personally.

if you didn't crash your car in the snow with summer tires, its because you got lucky, not because your Marcus Grönholm.

yeah again i had some cords showing on my previous set of neogens and had a buddy with an sti of course i thought blizzacks where the shit, then I was on tire rack and noticed that they arent even Z rated. I wasnt going to wait 5 months to get a new tires just so they could be winter tires.

how much time do you have to go back and search all that honestly lol.

Stop it. You're making yourself look like a total dickhead.

You can't beat physics, no matter HOW good of a driver you are. Non winter tires will not perform as well as winter tires. End of story. You will have more grip, more safety, and more fun on proper tires.

Of course winter tires aren't Z rated. That's because the compliant rubber compounds necessary to work in cold temperatures aren't optimal for high speed driving; they'll overheat. That doesn't take a genius to figure out.

That's why you switch back to Z rated summer tires once the snow melts.

Re: Summer tire in winter question

my whole point was neo gens work perfectly fine!!!! i did originally post that saying its about the driver because I know you cant control other drivers,or nature but you, yourself can control you driving habits, how closely you follow, how fast your going etc. its about your experience.

If I had the funds for a set of blizzacks or winter tires, id probably finish my car ie water-meth tune. Ive had the nittos before i got my second set in late july, they worked last year and they will work this year....

not in any way being a dickhead, trying to give a personal commendation vs reading what tire rack has to say!

That's all well and good, but your tire choice plays a key role in how you are able to perform all the things you mentioned. I would think someone who sees snow on a regular basis, and drives a high performance car, would recognize that and invest in a good set of winter tires. If you have ever driven a car with them, the benefits will be VERY apparent.

The tires are Nitto nt555 with about 30% tread left

I have those on the stang, check out the neo gens though, the whole reason I bought them again was cause of the tread patter, the middle has decent sized gaps i figured it would dig into the snow better.

Funny I did the same with T1Rs here in Chicago... the traction was actually decent...but hard braking turned the S into a sled...with the eps on its drivable but i dont recommend it for the long run...I also drove my S2000 on summer tires once in the snow...now thats scary!

Nitto Neo gens are all season tires--they SHOULD be driveable in winter weather. The NT555 is a summer compound, and even expert drivers may have trouble with them in the snow. All Nittos are not the same NogaroWonda00!

I honestly didn't know neo gens were all seasons. After Sti4now post that his summer nittos were "all OVER the place" in the snow and NogaroWonda responded with "neo gens?", I assumed they were summer tires..So yeah, you're right, all seasons SHOULD be driveable in the winter. Lately, I get away with all seasons in Maryland..How anyone could do it in Colorado is hard to imagine.

i had a set of the bfgoodrich gforce kdw2(the ones with the weird tred) and with the quattro i had no problems, i mean if i hit ice it would slide but other than that pretty good traction and fun to drift with, i put on a new set of the just the gforce sport tires they still have great traction im able to rail turns and its about high 20's low to mid 30's no problems.... i cant wait till it snows...drift meet in chicago

Those do have a funky tread pattern...but it's not only about the tread pattern. Summer tires are summer tires for a reason.
