    WTF! Cracked Windshield! Pics...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I wouldn't normally be upset about this because it happens sometimes due to rocks and shit.

This really pisses me off because it seems to of appeared over night. There is no signs of a rock hitting the window, or anything else of that matter.

I have not been driving hard either and all I use my car for, is to drive around this town(slow) now that I'm at school.

Here are some pics. To me it looks like a crack do to stress of the car, not a outward force (people/objects). It runs from the very bottom, to the part you see here.

Has this happened to anyone else?

My car is on its fourth windshield, all by 77k miles when the previous owner had it. I carry insurance with a zero deductible glass clause for this very reason. Windshields are $$$.

    ^^^thats crazy

Just did the classic post first, search later method. Anyway I found a thread from 2005 where some one said if it looks like a stress crack then the warranty would take care of it. It indeed looks like a stress crack but I don't have a warranty anymore. Audi should have to fix this warranty or not.

Your insurance will cover it under the comprehensive coverage. Hopefully your deductible isn't to high

    Re: WTF! Cracked Windshield! Pics...

Ill have to call the insurance place then and see what my deductible is.

The last place I saw a stress crack on a windshield was in a 500+hp 5.0 Mustang at the drag strip. Now I can add a Stock Audi A4 to the list.

End of rant. Thanks for your help guys.

How long ago did you have glass installed. I previously ran a auto glass dept. at my dealership and ones that start there with no impact or anything are stress cracks most of the time is from incorrect glass install, but also from wierd driving conditions that flex body i.e. Jumping your car or serious Auto X action.

Far as I know it is the factory glass. I don't race or Auto X, so its just a bunch of shit for me and others. I just came back from a 5 mile drive to get some lunch and it cracked another 3 inches toward the drivers side. I was going around a turn at about 30 mph or so (speed limit is 40) and heard a pop.

I was driving once on a empty road and mine crack with no apparent reason... I called safelite and they said if it was just a repair my insurance would cover for free. It worked for me.

By getting a new windshield. You can possible fix rock chips if they have not started cracking. But not for crack that is almost 8" long.

Had the smae to mine a few month back. Just on the top middle, no rock hit, seems like just stress???
I went with a PLY windshield to save 80 bucks. (High deductible made me pay myself).
One advice get the OEM as I'm not happy woth the windshield itself. Seems like it's warped in the middle.
Sorry and good luck with your decision.

that really sucks and hopefully your insurance is good with stuff like this.

whatever you do, do not get a ppg windshield. stick with sekurit or oem.

would this not be covered under CPO warranty by audi? (which i have)
since technically i did nothing to it...? it just grew under stress?

    Re: WTF! Cracked Windshield! Pics...

Same thing happened to me about a year ago when the car was still under warranty. I actually had the same exact crack as the OP. Took it to audi to try and have it replaced under warranty and they swore up and down that it was a rock (even though there is clearly no rock chip). After fighting it out with the dealership I just ended up going through insurance and having it replaced (insurance did not seal the new windshield properly and there were serious water issues, so make sure that doesn't happen to you, but that is a subject for another thread).

I had the same thing happened to me and the dealership refused to cover it under warranty. I had it covered under my insurrance. It seems the dealership will do anything they can to avoid doing glass repair under warranty, stress-crack or not.

Have you ever removed the windshield wipers from their driveshaft? It looks like the crack is coming from the area around the wiper spline, maybe pressure against the glass caused a small crack under the plastic and it just grew? Only a theory of course, seems the B6 has a habit of randomly breaking glass.

I called the insurance people to replace my glass and i did not have glass coverage? WTF and at this point is was calling to replace it. I added the glass coverage for me and the wife and left it cracked. So its been like 3 months and i'm waiting going to tell them its the second cracked windsheild in 3 months. Do you think they would need proof i replaced it the first time? Oops, i should have never told them it was cracked but i thought i had glass on my policy.

    Hi:
I am new to this forum. I bought a Q5 about 3 months ago for my wife. Of course she is in love with the car. However, the car is usually parked in a garage at work and at home. It has no external scratch, no signs of any impact, but there is an "L" shape crack on the lower left side by the inspection sticker. It seemed to have appeared overnight. Any idea what could have caused that? Thanks.

I had the windshield crack in my M3 from having the defroster on, parking in the cold rain, then getting back in the car. When I started the car, the hot defroster hit the cold windshield and cracked it. It sucks but that's what insurance is for.

same thing happened to my dads Tahoe, it was parked outside in salt lake during the winter, covered in snow. so he did the same thing he always does, gets in and starts the car so it can heat up while he clears the car of snow. he turned it on and put the defroster on hot and the windshield cracked like a MoFo.

when i got my first car, a ford explorer, i got a couple small rock chips across my windshield, nothing out of the norm though. one day im driving on the freeway, same route i took everyday in high school, doing about 70 and i go over an overpass. its a little bumpy but was never a problem before, i hit a small bump and BAM, this huge freaking crack shoots across my windshield from the drivers side to the passenger side. scared the living hell out of me.
Thanks for the EFF shack. -Dirty Mike and the Boyz

i see it rained....was it kind of hot out previously? maybe the hot temp plus cold rain caused a previously unnoticed crack to grow to what you see there? anyway, just call insurance...a rock hit your windshield...youre good to go.

don't replace it with aftermarket shit. when it comes to the windshield stick with OEM.
i can wait till the one i have cracks again (already have a few small stars on it) so i can get a nice OEM one without the waves in it. i was warned by a few people but didn't have the cash and though "how bad could it really be?"

    Yes.

OP, I had a crack like that happen EXACTLY. It went straight up from the bottom molding & made a 90 degree left towards the driver area. Very weird. But it was covered under insurance. New glass is so nice, it's like it's not even there!
