So, finally got my hands on some 17' S4 Avus rims off a b5 s4 for my winter setup. I am calling up tire places looking for some blizzak LM 25's. So I call up VIP auto because they are having a winter tire sale. He asks me what car I have and I say a 03 A4 quattro but the rims are off an 01 S4. Then he says, ok what tires do you want? I say H rated 225/45/17 blizzak LM 25's. He says I don't see that tire size for the A4. I say, well that's because they are going on S4 rims.

Long story short he says and I quote, "you can put tires on whatever rims you want but they have to be meant for your car because the speed ratings can be different."

So now because I'm new to this modding scene, and this may sound stupid but is he right? I mean, I just ended up ordereing the blizzaks off tirerack.com in the size I asked for and I'm having one of there preferred installer mount and balance them.

So is this VIP guy talking out of his ass or am I really doing something I shouldn't be?

Nah dude... you're fine. Winter tires are usually rated up to 80mph. I guess it could be a store policy of theirs... but it doesn't make much sense. What's the difference if you bought rims from them or bought your S4 wheels? They're both 5x112so doesn't mean that they're meant for your car?

Maybe what hes saying is the smaller tires will set off your speedometer which is true because the rolling diameter is different then stock. But its fraction with the 235-> 225 tire size so it doesn't even matter.

No thats not what he is saying, A ton of tires store will only put tires on rims that meet the speed rating of the oem tire. you either tell them they are after market rims or find a car that has those sizes from the factory. I would just tell that company to fuck off and shop elsewhere. What was the best price you have found for those tires? I might be able to help.

That is all true, but I think the guy I talked to is just an idiot or following some extremly strict store policy.

The Michelin Pilots that came with the car are H rated (130mph) and the Blizzak LM25's I asked for are also H rated. So the speed rating argument is basically void.

Costco Tire shop will do the same, stick to store policy. Whatever size is supposed to go on the car is all they will sell. Nothing bigger or smaller. Kinda stupid but at the same time they are just protecting their own ass.

Guys, this thread of mine is way old. Someone just brought it back. Like I said, I'm been using the blizzaks on my 17" s4 rims for a few weeks now and everything is great.

Sorry to come into this super late but a lot of places are like that......I know because I wanted to do the same thing with my car and a bunch of places said that they would put the tires on the wheels but they wouldnt mount them on my car!!!

Yeah, I ended up at a NTB and they didn't even think twice about it. Had my S4 rims mounted and balanced in no time. When I asked for an alignment though they said they couldn't do it?!
