    Question Gas Gauge Adjusting?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone noticed that depending on how you drive, that the gas gauge adjusts itself to how much gas is left. I noticed it the other day. I commute to college (~50 miles) so at the beginning of my trip I in an urban area (stop and go), then highway (so now lets say I filled up before I left) by the time I get to my destination (I have a little less than full tank). Get into another urban area gas gauge adjusts itself to a less than 3/4 tank almost in between 3/4 and 1/2. So do our cars' gas gauge act like mpg estimator?

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

I think you might be making up a good story for what you think is a mpg estimator when in fact you have a bad fuel level sensor.

    ^^ You're wrong.

The needle estimates gas left at particular driving habit / mpg.

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

its depends on driving styles. you will find that when you start your car your car runs more timing and more fuel to help warm up the motor faster. thats why as the motor comes up to temp, so does the gas needle. its based on fuel consumption

Yea thats what Im talking about. It just funny cuz one would think that a gas gauge would not do that. like other euro cars bmw and benz they have mpg gauge to them.

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

I think it's weird but that's what it does.
What I want to know is since the trip computer has MPG average and real time then why on earth did they make the gas gauge work like this?

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

I have to disagree with the lot of you, I think it's bad fuel level sensors.

I'm with you on this one, my fuel gauge is all over the place. Just depends on how much of a moron i'm driving.

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

That's a shame. I'd like to know exactly how much gas I have left, not an estimation depending on how I'm driving... that's what my average mpg number is for, or my instantaneous mpg number is for or even my miles left indicator.

I disagreed because I've had a different experience, my gas gauge hasn't always acted like you've mentioned. Another reason is because of the design of the sensor. Oh well, if you guys are right, I think it's lame. We've got enough indicators on mpg, I'd like an actual accurate idea on how much gas left - without the variables.

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

this happens on a ton of different cars, gas gauges are only roughly accurate

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

you guys sure this is true? as far as the mpg read out thing as an argument goes...not all b5's have them so that could be a reason for doing it.

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

the gas gauge goes crazy if you have the VSS disconnected as well. The gas gauge isn't so simple for some reason. Audi does stuff the hard way.

    Re: Gas Gauge Adjusting?

that would explain a lot actually... and makes the gauge a little misleading if anything.. oh well... I've been fairly light-footed lately anyway
