Question open DV on custom tune

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
if I'm running an MRC tune one my BAT ATW, why cant I leave my DV open, aside from the fact that I should run a BOV instead of an open DV. I just really dont want to deal with my TIP.

Im aware of the ECU reading unmeasured air and running lean yada yada yada...but is that incorporated in my tune or is the ECU itself?

Re: open DV on custom tune

nope - DV will leak a little at idle - very bad.

Re: open DV on custom tune

but whats the difference between that going into my TIP with an open filter right next to it or going just outside the filter?

Re: open DV on custom tune

I may not be right here, but that small amount of air that leaks out of the DV at idle likely gets sucked in through the turbo compressor housing, and through the IC system.....while the car is idling, the turbine does spins slowly, but enough to suck in that small volume of air (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Thus, the system is sealed....The air doesn't o anywhere else, whereas if you leave it open, it acts as a leak

I never liked the BOV sound, but just recently got a Forge OO4....very subtle sound. Not like the typical chirp u associate with other blow offs

yeah, it was just brought to my attention that the fact that Im running a mafless tune would negate the count of recirculated air, I'm going to run a small filter on ym DV for now and probably get a BOV later. so the 004 doesn't sound "immature" for lack of a better term?

    no no no...

Either run a BOV or keep it as is. If you let the DV leak @ idle, you are going to have all kinds of problems.

    P.S. I run an 004.. I can't barely hear it - I wish it was a bit louder.

so you dont think I should run the filtered DV...makes sense, I'll look into some BOV's

At idle, the DV is open, but it's not leaking air out... The vacuum in the charge pipes is sucking air in. On a car with a MAF, this is bad as unmetered air is getting to the engine. On a MAF-less car, it doesn't matter. Only thing you'd have to worry about is maybe a tiny foreign object or excessive dirt getting sucked in.

TiAL and Synapse are the two brands I would look into for BOVs.

Thanks, I'll check those, I've always been so against BOV's I know nothing about the ones available...ha ha, now I feel like a hypocrite.

I think the 001 is my best bet, a lot of the BOV's I've seen don't incorporate a "bung" application.

Are you looking for something to stay closed at idle or open? http://videos.streetfire.net/video/A...ds-a_85134.htm

Or by bung you mean they have to have an adaptor welded to your intercooler piping?

Re: open DV on custom tune

I would weld another bung closer to the TB to avoid back pressure traveling through the system.....I originally had my forge 004 in the same bung as my DV on the HOT side of the IC. However, since it was so far away from the TB, when it closed, I got a huge wave of back pressure travelling back through the IC and to my BOV, which was fairly close to the compressor housing. Yesterday, I plugged that original hot side DV bung, and I welded a piece of 1" pipe a few inches before the TB, and that virtually eliminated my compressor surge (i.e. back pressure).....I'd recommend doing the same, because if that pressure travels too far back in the IC system, ur turbine will likely spin backwards (which can be lethal).

seems like I'd want something open during idle with a filter on it. I dont want to recirculate the BOV or I'd stick with a DV.

are you still running the 004? are you MAFless? last question: is the 004 open during idle?

What DV setup are you using right now?

004 is a dual piston design and does not open during idle.

You can get the Synapse BOV with a kit to adapt it to the coupler your current DV is connected to, or just have a new bung welded on.

Re: open DV on custom tune

I'm also Maf-less.....I originally had my hardware setup to run an MAF and a DV, but when I got the reflash, I changed over to the Forge 004. It worked just fine (sounds very nice, and if u hate normal BOV's, its the perfect option, IMO), but, when mounted on the hot side, I was getting that surge issue I described above......and no, the 004 is NOT open during idle. It only opens when the throttle closes after being under boost (it doesn't open everytime u rev)....its a great lil piece

I think the best performance, as far as throttle response, would be to have an open BOV during idle with a filter for foreign objects.

Re: open DV on custom tune

yeah its pretty informative, but it makes sense, instead of the engine pulling air all the way from the TIP, through the hot side piping, thru the IC core, thru the cold side piping, and into the intake manifold, there is some air being taken right from the cold side piping.

basically shorter intake run while not under boost. only improved throttle response b/c it closes the loop as soon as the throttle is open.
