Im askin myself this question everyday for 2009....Id love to stay with VW/Audi/Porsche
but the E90 M3 IS on the must have list along with the B7 RS4
Better resale, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to insure

Akatsuki care to elabore why a 997 c2 would be outdated? Not because the facelifted 09s are out that the model is outdated. Id rock almost any older inline 5 audi's over anything the current line-up(rs4 excluded) Hell Id take an outdated Sport Quattro over an R8

    Re: 05 carrera (maybe s) or 2008 M3

for me here are the pros for the porsche:

    Just being a porsche
    MPG
    Reliability
    Fun factor

    M3:
    Newer
    Great transmission
    cheaper insurance (i would think)
    Not as flashy
Fun also, but not as much

I need some more input guys!!

1998 Carrera S would be my choice

but yeah, it's a hard decision, Porsche is Porsche, and the BMW M3 is an awesome machine and looks decent in coupe form, but the Porsche is all class and character. Sooo yeah, I don't know where i'm going with this...

That 993 is gorgeous...I still cant get over that post saying that a 997 is outdated.....The only 911 that I dislike is the 996. A 911 is like one the older it gets the more desirable it is. The newer ones loose value like crazy because all this attention whore and ceo dump once a new model gets on the block while the real enthusiasts are looking for the old computer less ones. I dont care for the chrono options, leather,PDK. The old models always appreciate with time even the ugly problematic 996 will appreciate one day...

tough call, never driven the new M3, but I really don't like driving the 911's, that ass is just way too heavy and is itching to fly out in a corner.
eventually your going to spin out in your 911, all 911 owners do, the lucky ones don't hit anything.

for a Porsche, i'd look at the cayman S, get it chipped and it will be far superior to the 911, add a LSD and it will rival a 4S.
Porsche purposley gave the cayman an open diff and tuned it so it wouldn't make more power than a base 911, otherwise it would easily spank a 911 on the ring not to mention cost less.

997 all day and night long.. they can be had in the high 40s to low 50s so you would $ left over for mods too. Plus M3 drivers have have no friends.

Outdated because of the body mostly cosmetic reasons. I just don't like the rear end on it. It looks kinda odd to me. I've been looking at the gt3 and the rs version wayyyy too much and when I see a Carrera s it looks kinda oudated.

It's my personal opinion though. I would get the new m3 over the 05 cs because it looks better to me. Again just my thinking...

    ^^Hell yes.

You know, as far as stigmas go, I feel as if BMW has usurped any bad Porsche stigma that may have been out there.

    hard choice man..

Porsche will definatly loose its resell value a lot faster if thats a factore

I love both cars, but I think id have to go with the M3 on this one :( just because its still a fairly rare car, and I see a lot of carreras

my dads had a cayenne S, 03 turbo, and a 03 carrera and I LOVED those cars but ive been so used to them its kinda lost its "oh shit" ness to me :-/

porsche makes awesome cars, but honestly 9/10 guys driving them are so lame they probably haven't even hit 90mph before. unless it's an older model or you really drive the piss out of it, it's just a mid-life crisis car to me. i'm not a fan of the '05 Carrera's look either...there are too many better looking porsche's out there. go with the new M3, i'm sure it will blow your mind more-so than the Carrera.

I am starting to lean towards M3 now because I am guessing insurance will be less. Re-sale will be better on it and cheaper to own. Can anyone chime in on that?

I would go with the used porsche on this one.I would be very surprised if a used porsche depreciates more than a new ~$60,000 BMW.

Oh and if porsches have lost their "oh shit factor" to you, how does it feel driving your A3? LoL.

I bet the fun factor in the M3 will be 10X more than the porsche.

Yes on the insurance, the M3 is a sedan whether it has 2 or 4 doors insurance views it as a sedan. I am assuming you are thinking new so the resale will plummet immedeately vs. the 05 911 which will taken its' biggest depreciation already. I mean there are 10-15 year 911's out there selling for pretty high values.

^ I would say go for the BMW, and for these reasons...

Porsche is nice, but I would want a new one so I could do the break in period and make sre that it gets "babied" for a bit of time before its sees any hard driving.

The Porsches repair bills will be a lot more.

the Bimmer will have every last damn thing on it covered under warranty (oil, tires, etc)

and you'll get that monster new V8!

I'd say go for it if it was a new 4s or something..

no new body style just a 2008 low mileage which there are some out, but i wont be buying till spring. The porsche just has that wow factor over the BMW which make me want it, but im sure i will pay near nothing to own the BMW.

I did, i didn't like it, really comforatable tho, and the engine sounds great, but i don't like that there is no weight in the front.
If i get a Porsche, its going to be a cayman, if for some reason i get a 911 the first thing i'm doing is putting two cement bags in the front trunk.

not to mention Porsche's had pretty bad interiors until recently (997 and lastest boxster/cayman/cayenne)
