    Bizzare Sound

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I fired up my car this morning to drive back to school, and it started making this wierd humming/buzzing sound from somewhere around the rear driver's-side wheel well.

The sound isn't noticable above 70 mph, but it's clearly audible at any speed below that. At low speeds it's fairly loud.

Any idea as to what the problem could be?

(I had my oil changed yesterday, but didn't have any problems when driving back from the shop).

    Thanks

    Re: Bizzare Sound

I doubt that it has anything to do with a wheel bearing, because the sound continues even when the car isn't moving.

I would guess that the noise persisting even when parked also eliminates the parking brake possibility.

If it is the fuel pump, what exactly has happened? The noise is pretty loud now, though it constantly fluctuates up and down in volume. It can be heard inside and outside the car, and though I had it pinned as originating from the drivers side rear wheel well, it could very well come from some other part of the rear of the car. It is certainly coming from somewhere behind or beneath the front seats.

ahhh i missed that part about when not moving. if that's the case eliminate anything that has to do with brakes as well just like you said. i'd replace the pump if you have a stocker with some miles on it just as a precautionary measure anyways. other than possible bad grounds making noise in the speakers (unlikely) i can't really think of much else that would come from the rear of the car when it's stationary

I'd say it's the fuel filter that needs to be replaced. Turn on the car and look underneath in front of the rear passenger tire. You'll have to take off the black cover (if you have it) to access the filter. Touch the filter and if you can feel it vibrating, that's your culprit. There's a filter DIY on here too. If you have never changed the filter then I'm sure it's more than overdue.

    3rd on fuel filter.
Had the same thing happen @ around 60k. For some reason it doesnt seem to be a regular maintenace item but it should, seeing how regularly a lot of people here have experienced it. I made a mental note to change the fuel filter every 30-40k miles and always keep one spare. For the amount of driving I do it's about once every 3 years. ECSTuning.com is where I get mine.

    Re: Bizzare Sound

To be perfectly honest I have practically zero hand's-on knowledge in terms of fixing problems with the car.

How much am I looking at if I take it to a dealer to get a new fuel filter?

^take it to an independent shop for the fuel filter. the dealer is going to rip you a new asshole over it and it's a 10 minute job. if you have a screw driver and can tell left from right you're capable of doing this yourself.

Word. Am I damaging the car if I continue to drive it for a bit? I'm at school now and I won't be able to get to a decent shop until thanksgiving.

    Re: Bizzare Sound

auggy, this is most likely something you can tackle yourself. A fuel filter swap is really easy. Done it myself... took all of 15 minutes start to cleanup. Here's the DIY. My only suggestion would be to order the filter online so you don't get shafted at the parts counter.

    Re: Bizzare Sound

If you continue to drive the filter you will eventually kill the fuel pump. Change it as soon as you get a chance. Going to the dealer will vary. Call them and ask. But like others said, it's really easy. My problem was with getting the clips off of the hoses coming from the filter. But aside from that, it's a very easy job.
