    It's a 30V.

12V models were built up to August 1997.

The tails give that away for an early '98 model. I know the '98.5s all have the 30V.

August is the split for early 98's and lat 97's though. I swear I had an early '98 12V in the shop this week.

Honestly, call up the seller and have him take a pic under the hood. That way you know for sure.

Hmm, perhaps US-spec cars are different to what we have here in the UK / Europe.

The old tails where replaced in July '96 for the mid-ones, and ran till '99.

The 12V engines where also phased out, and replaced by the 30V units from September '97.

    Re: 12v or 30v

Ok so theres a lot of info floating in this thread so im going to clean it up for you.

    in NA:
    96, 97, 98 all had the 12V
    98.5 up until 2001 had the 30V

If you want to tell the diff in 98 and 98.5 the easiest way (if it hasnt been molested) is the taillights, those on that car are the 98 taillights. Otherwise you need to look in the interior, 98.5 had the updated radio and upgraded tails (The tails are still different then the 99.5+).

The car in question is a 12V and i would put money on it.

    Re: 12v or 30v

yea man i know a good bit info on this kind of stuff.

it is very hard to say what kind of engine it has, it shows to be a early 98(12v) because these reasons....

audi emblem under side turn signals, rear tails, old style radio.

reasons it could be a 30v is because it looks to have sport suspension, and sport wheels which i dont think were available for the early 98 12v...

I wouldn't pass it up, based on it being a 12V.

That car just looks so clean, and 12V motors are as smooth as later 30V ones, without the common camshaft chain issues.

honestly man, i like my 12v, its not super fast but whos cares, a4's arent supposed to be super fast. It is a very smooth fun DD with a few mods like exhaust sound system susp ect.

but it being a automatic is what i would be concerned about...

not gunna lie i like the smoothness and how my engine drives over the newer b6 and that meaning the b5 turbo engines as well.(unless there totally aftermarket with crazy turbos and chips and w/e the hell you turbo freaks do.. haha) Even with 120k miles its just so much smoother IMO.

190 hp would be pretty nice compared to the 172 hp. But torque aint bad at 185....

If you are getting it just for DD and nothing else matters. Get it. No point in paying more for a 30V for 18 extra HP

The 2.8 in the A6 is a 30V so if you want bigger then that is the way to go but if you just want a daily the 12V is reliable and cheap.

Nice! so its a win win now for you... if its a 30v then you have that benefit of having the upgrade, but if its not, (when you go look at the engine bay youll know) you should be able to talk him down in price a bit more... tell him that you said it was a 30v and if its only the 12v you want a discount

It's not a 12v considering my car's the same exact one, except mine's emerald green and has beige leather. Tiptronic transmissions in the A4's started early 98, thus it applying to the 30v engines. 12v engines as stated in this thread were from 96-97.

well it was a 30 valve, i didnt buy it because it seems like it would need alot of work, brakes were really poor didnt feel like they wanted to stop the car, tires were almost bald and i said somthin and all i got was "well it passed nys inspection" and the steering was real loose.. felt like i was drivin my 89 f 150

Ha ha, so is your plan to just stick with your b6 and ride it out? Or have you looked around for other vehicles at a cheaper price?

    Re: 12v or 30v

    I knew it would be a 30V.

Never heard of 12V motors in '98 model year.

The car in question is a 12V and i would put money on it.
    bit
off... cause i have the early 98 with the old tails, audi logo under the side markers, the two piece door handles and 2 piece headlight and..... I have a 30v. 12v stopped mid 97.
