    Winter beater?

    Anyone have a winter beater?

Thinking of getting a 2002 Jetta VR6 for $6000 bucks. Think it's a good deal? The car is in excellent mechanical condition. Only fault I can find is that one rim is curbed to hell and the inside of it smells like a freakin giant crayon box.

    Re: Winter beater?

Yea i know, defeats the purpose of the quattro. I'm not too sure about it but I hate plowing the streets in the morning. I also live in a crt kinda thing and they never plow it. I have to walk out with a shovel and clear out the tracks left by my neighbors which have frozen over. I can't make it over those. I also hate when cars in front of me drop off one of those wheel well chunks of ice which I can't dodge which hits something under my car that goes CLUNK every time.

But besides the defeating purpose point, do you guys think that's a good deal? Perfect mechanical condition, VR6, auto, power everything.

With that logic you probably shouldn't go outside as you may be stuck by lighting/buss/airplane, get shot, bit by a rabid dog/cat/bird, catch SARS, etc, etc, etc.

Yea I don't think I'm going to get it. As much as I want to just trash it around and not worry about anything, I don't think I can live without Quattro. I have so much fun during winter leaving people at the lights while they're still spinning their tires I don't think I can join them.

I can't wait till it snows so I can start doing that again. haha

    Re: Winter beater?

i know what your saying bryan and respect that. winter is different though. lets be realistic, no one knows how to drive when snow falls, thats why u will see 10 cars in the ditch first major snowfall. insurance or not, last thing i would want to do is have to write off my car since some warper cant drive. i wouldnt be able to recoup almost any of my aftermarket parts since i paid cash or paypal, and insurance will not cover that. write off my $500 civic, it would pain me less.

ive got a civic hatch, 92. body is in good condition and runs like a camp, its manual too. just put some nordfrost 5's on it, and will be getting the tires studded. better the civic then my a6 that ive dumped more money into the car then its worth lol.

op, beaters are typically supposed to be very inexpensive, i would say 2-3k tops for a "Beater" 6k for a car is not really a beater imo. find a honda or an old audi (im still looking for a coupe quattro for a proper beater) put some good tires on it and call it day

THIS is a good winter car. :) Worth the drive home from Winnipeg! If I had the space to park it the rest of the year, I'd buy this tomorrow.

    Re: Winter beater?

Personally, I like driving in the winter with AWD - feeling safe and capable.

Unfortunately if you get hit, there isn't much you can do about it.

What might be worse is getting hit in the beater and then have it written off by the insurance below book value.

You could rent a beater on a monthly basis?

    Re: Winter beater?

Just got my snows on today actually. Hankook Icebears. Can't wait to try it out in the snow.

I actually have another reason to getting the Jetta besides it being a winter beater. It would only be a winter beater for this season then I'd be giving it to my brother or selling it. He just got his license and doesn't have a car to practice on. So I figured I'd get that to let him practice on (no way he's touching my Audi) and drive it at the same time, then probably sell it afterwards. I know the person who owns the car currently so I was just wondering if it was a good deal or not.

yup, but I'd still drive my audi when it bitching snow :) that's why I bought the quattro for!

and... don't bash on our cousins... porsche's, and lambo's...
we're all in the same big happy family
and they have awd too! but some of them will get stuck 'cause they're too low haha, snow prowlers.

I wouldn't go near an automatic volkswagen... to answer your original question. Seems like a fair price, but yeah. No way. Auto VW = bad. I think by that year they had the problems sorted out (Mk3 automatics were time bombs), but still... VR6 is such a fun car. It'd be wasted with an auto!

Buy the 90 Quattro 20V in Winnipeg I posted! :)

porsches and lambos are mostly AWD now!

but good point...what the fuq would you buy a beater for an Audi? It's not like you need to mothball it and hide it whenever there is a chance of precipitate. Ridiculous.

all winter last year. Remember the snow we had?

Snow doesn't really bother me all that much. But remember last year how the sun kept melting the snow, then at night it would freeze again? Those ice tracks killed me last year, my street (only my part of the street) doesn't get plowed. So I have to walk around with a shovel clearing that crap off. My neighbors must always be wondering why the hell I'm shoveling the street lol.

That wouldn't help me. It would only give me better traction to pull me over those tracks, resulting in more damage to the underside.
