    Pre "big job" recomendations

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I blew one of my stock ko3 turbos (120000m on car)
    I have purchased
Pair KO4-16 turbos and surrounding hardware (gaskets/seals/studs)
RS4 Inlet Pipes and surrounding hardware (gaskets/seals/studs)
RS4 Clutch kit n new bolts for Flywhl
Green top Coolant Sensor and seal
    Auxiliary/Secondary water pump
    Head Seal Kit
    Snub
    Front O2 sensors (pair)
CEL Eliminators for rear O2 sensors
    Turbo boost gauge
    The Question is coming...
The car (six psd)"pre turbo blow" was/is running GREAT! (bad fR-Rt O2)
It has an APR program 91/93, KnN AFilter, Kevlar wrapped TBB, N710 DV's, other than that the car is stock.
I am trying to cover repairs and upgrades that are a must to do while the car is torn apart, that said i need to keep my costs under control. I look forward to adding more goodies as time/money (mainly money) are more readily available. When i add something to this puppy, i want it to be added with future upgrades in mind.
Time is agents me on this job so I won’t be wrenching this myself (mixed emotions about that) I'm hoping to get my down pipes from the mechanics and piggy them overnight for next day install.
I have hopefully found a good shop. The dealer didn’t want the job as the KO4’s aren’t OEM on my VIN??? Nor the inlets, clutch ……
    Questions are:
    AM I MISSING ANYTHING!!!
    and
How much extra work for a pro mechanic would it be to do the Green top Coolant Sensor and seal, Auxiliary/Secondary water pump, Head Seal Kit, Snub, Front O2 sensors and theCEL Eliminators for rear O2 sensors while the engine is out of the car.
Any feedback is always appreciated and sometimes down right entertaining.
    Thanks!
    Steve

No need for any of that. Depending on what kind of tune you are going with stock pump is just fine and si is the fuel pressure regulator. It's not bad to do the mounts while you are at it but if they are fine i wouldn't bother, people say to replace them because they are a pain if the motor is not out.

Where in Ontario are you? What shop are you bringing it to?

I'm very curious to know the overall amount as I'm tempting fate with 140k on my stock K03's right now with a Giac-X chip.

I'm not to far from Mosport (where i blew the turbo) so not to to far from you.
The shop... I'll report on that after the job is done...
Is that 140k (miles or Km) on your car,
if its Km, get timing n waterpump service done and i'd think all can be good for another 60k/km as long as you don't beat on it and warm it up/cool it down and change the oil often. Oh and keep it off the track unless you are itching for a justifiable reason to put on a new set of turbos....
With your Giac can you tone it down or is there only one setting?
My lesson was as i have two settings (fast and faster) i should have used the tamer of the two at the track, as on the street I can unleash all the stops once in a blue moon, on the track, it’s steady WOT if your not on the brake… With the KO4's, my understanding is that they might give a bit more power but they are going to be more efficient and hardy.
I have found the best prices (that i found), were at VAG Parts in the UK, shipping was quick+++ to Can., VAST in MI, those guys have everything and are very knowledgeable. Cost wise, well it all adds up (cha ching).
I'm afraid to mention any costs as my wife might see this post, she thinks this is all costing around as much as the new dog she got??? (I didn't ask how much the dog cost, but i hope it was a lot!)

coolant sensor/seal shouldn't be more than like $10-20 additional to put in since it's so frickin' easy especially with the engine out. Do your motor mounts and be glad you did. Tranny mounts can be done later if need be. Snub mount should again be like $10-20 bucks to install since it's so easy when you're this far in. Do your TB + WP + Thermostat+ idler wheel+tensioner wheel. Get a delrin bushing from JHM for the slop fix in the shifter linkage while it is all out. Again, it's like a 5 minute mod when the engine is out. Keep the clutch fan OFF of the car and get an after-run switch from ECS tuning. Get a new style AWE boost gauge if you're looking at one.

Yeah do the motor mounts while it's out, and wait on tranny (unless they're shot) because they can be done easily later. 034 had the cheapest mounts last I looked.

They are from "Buehn Engineering" - Jacob Buehn...
They say KO4-16 and a KO4-25 on the tag.
It appears there is a left and a right.
One has a bit of a longerpiping/housing on it.
I got them from a friend that siad they are a perfect fit.
I think they are KO4's with a Porsche impeller... if that makes sence

You must be that "special guy" that others mention
Taking something apart is kids play, have you ever put it back together....
of course the next question is, once back together, did it work?
I guess reassembling takes you only about 2 or 3 hours also.
What is your process and secret
Any time the parts add up to more than $114 and i'd need more than three tools, It's a "big job " to me.

special? nah i just work fast. plus i know how to work on cars. ive taken out b5 s4's motors about 7 times now..and put back together. i did all the work to my k04 s4 that went 11.2 full interior.

process? take the motor out with tranny, drop it with the subframe. think about it...take off the front end with bulkhead (20 min)...drain fluids (10 min)...take out the axles/driveshaft/control arms (20 min)...unbolt motor and support it....(30 min)....take out (10 min) of course obviously things vary if youre having a problem.

you can do it, its not hard. id recommend anyone who has time to do it. sure beats 2k or whatever the place charges for labor. id kill myself for paying something 2,000 dollars for something i can do.

I bet there is much time to save if you know what parts that can be pulled as major assemblies instead of dissassembly into single parts.

Please, can't you provide some more detail on the fastest/best way to pull it?

I'm starting the Stg3 install on Saturday!

    First then

    Re: Pre "big job" recomendations

Unbolt the exhaust, shifter and all the conectors/ hoses unbolt the engine mounts hook the motor up and out she goes. That's all it takes just like the guy above said. First time it took me 2.5 hours now i can do it faster than that. I have my motor all torn down to the bare block in a couple hours and that's with me putting all the bolts in zip bags so i know where what goes.

When you look at it for the first time you tell yourself man what i'm i getting my self into but when you start doing it it's not all that bad. Of course i'm a mechanic at a dealership so even if i never did something i still have to do it.
