B7 Daytime Running lamps upgraded to LED bulbs

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yep - I finally got round to replacing my PIAA 'Superwhite' single filament DRL bulbs with some leds (fitted with load resistors).....

Here's a 'during' shot - the PIAA's are on the right

And then the finished article - again shown here with my 'always on' led strips:

So now I've fitted the PIAA's to the reverse lamps - one installed here on the left:

So difficult to shoot - but the PIAA's look so much whiter in the flesh

I've always said - "One day I'll be able to afford a BMW, and when that day comes I'm gonna buy an Audi"

They're just PIAA Xtreme white Filament 21watt Bulbs - I bought them from online in the uk - but you should be able to get them in the states.

    They're a blue coloured bulb......and are coded H227 - S25 Single 382 Bayonet 12V 21W

looks like you've installed some vertical chrome strips on your grille since the older picture. Not usually a fan of those, but I like it here...which is somewhat ironic because I typically don't like the big fishmouth grille design. Somehow I guess it looks better to me this way. Not just being tricked by the camera, am I?

The ECU doesn't recognize any resistance in the LED's within the headlamps, until I installed the load resistors - then it was fine.

You don't have to use resistors on the 'strip led's' - dependant on where you wire them to. In my case they're just wired to a switched live, so they're 'always on'.

As for the led's in the headlamps - you don't have to use the load resistors, but if you don't then you have to put up with the bulb out warning on the dash

Do you notice a difference in brightness when you're backing up at night?

The reverse light brightness has been the one thing that was better with my old truck compared to the A4. That old truck's reverse lights illuminated everything behind it really well. I wish the A4 would be brighter.

In truth - only in my mind.....

I wonder if I could do a HID conversion

Seriously though - I wired 55Watt H3 bulbs into my reversing lamps, I wonder if our computer system would cope with that?

    Is it an led then?

Here's what a load resistor looks like:

CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS: Connect one wire to ground (or ground wire) and the other wire to the positive wire connected to the bulb. You do not have to cut your car's wires. Squeeze splice taps with pliers. Please note Resistors get hot and must be fitted away from any plastic parts.
