    Brake pad questions

So when the time came around for new front pads/rotors, I opted for OEM rotors but decided to get Mintex red brake pads. After the install, the pads were squeaking quite often, but I figured the squeaking would go away within a few days or so since they were brand new. But, the squeaking never went away. I ended up going to a mechanic to do put on the pads because I didn't have time to do it myself; when I questioned him his response simply was that all aftermarket pads squeak..?

I'm no expert on brakes so I dont know the validity of this response. All I know is my brakes are still squeaking after having them on quite a bit. I did a little research and found out that some aftermarket brake pads will scratch OEM rotors, or they are simply not put on as they should and therefore squeak.

So, should I get new pads? Take it into an audi performance shop and make sure Mintex pads need to be installed a certain way? Or get OEM pads to match the OEM rotors? OR just say screw it and live with the squeak?

    Re: Brake pad questions

From what I know, a) your rotors will be fine and b) you may need to apply some (more?) anti-squeal to the backs of the pads.

Otherwise, you may have to live with a little squeal, and it should be harmless.

    Re: Brake pad questions

Audi's are prone to squealing when they are all stock, an audi service adviser i know told me they get alot of complaints about it (warranty issue)

more anti-squeal(let it set for about 5 min before installing too), chamfer the pads, and lube all the sliders, a dab of lube on the (metal backing) side of the inner front pads helps too.

    Re: Brake pad questions

I just did complete brake job on my car and put slotted / crossdrilled rotors on with OEM pads. The shop I use said outside of ceramic they are the only ones that they have found that don't squeek. The pads weren't cheap ($175) for the front but I haven't had any squeaking and they work great.

    Re: Brake pad questions

ALL brakes make noise. Doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.. However there are many methods to reducing it... lubing the pad carriers where the pads slide, roughing the surface of the rotor to "break up" any grooves, chamfering the edges of the friction material/ block sand the pads, anti squeal liquid graphite stuff you apply directly on the pads, etc.... Most are only temporary.

OEM pads are generally pretty good comprimise as far as noise, performance, and dust for most everyday drivers.

Aside from the occasional squeak here and there, I also have had very good luck w/ PBR ceramic pads. Good performance, decent dust, low noise, but seem to wear rather quickly

What he said... I have Adams crossdrilled/slotted rotors all the way around with Audi pads. I get a ton of brake dust in the front, but the stopping performance at high speeds is astounding. Oh, and the only brake noise I have is the sound of air going though the drilled holes and slots, haha.
