Is anyone still running NGK copper plugs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anybody run NGK copper spark plugs at 3,000 to 4,000 miles? I know they tend to foul within those miles.

Since I currently have 2,786 miles on my spark plugs, should I keep them or change them?

Re: Is anyone still running NGK copper plugs?

I think most people replace them every oil change, so along the lines of 5000 miles. Are you noticing any performance loss, misfires, etc??

Now that you mention it.... I notice after the car is warm up, theres this small bog like the car wants to shut off.

Re: Is anyone still running NGK copper plugs?

i ran mine until 7K miles once and when i replaced them they looked to be toasted. i love running the NGK's though, at $8 for 4 you can't beat the price. easy to change them out at oil changes as well. my girlfriend's MKV GLI on the other hand is a different story. removing the engine cover to replace them every 5K miles is a b*tch! next time i'm going to get some longer lasting plugs for her...err more-so for me so i don't have to remove that damn cover so often!

I got the same problem and I have about the same milage on mine. Car's throttle response sux and before the car is full warm it drops below 800rpm and tries to turn off. It's stalled itself 5 times ion the past 3 weeks. Could be my boost and vac leaks though.

I usually change mine every oil change, but it's been almost 8k miles on this last set and I haven't noticed any difference really.

I'm running BKR7E's in my car (one range colder) and love them! They get changed at @5000 miles along with oil, whether they look OK or not. Like somebody said for $8 its a no-brainer.

To the dude with the idle problem (after warmup) what are you gapping your plugs at? Checked your coils lately?

My car is a little grumpy UNTIL it warms up, but I think that's an environmental thing with these "colder" plugs. Will probably gap them tighter or put a set of BKR6E's in until Spring...per OldGuy's suggestion.

Gap size is .28...an my coils are brand new...must be an environmental thing then.

Re: Is anyone still running NGK copper plugs?

I originally thought the same thing, that the NGK's were cashed. I decided to replace the o2 sensor because I would occasionally get a "response to slow" code. Problem solved, the new sensor fixed the crappy cold throttle response.

wondering if my rough idle issue while using BKR7E's is due to the altitude that i'm at? no one else here has a rougher idle with 7E's versus 6E's at Stage 1+ right? i'm gapped at .028 and all four coil packs are new.

I bet it's happening since it got colder out correct? Run a warmer plug here in the CO winter. I run a very cold plug for this area (FR5DTC) and definitely would not run them if I had to cold start my car in 30deg or under. (My garage stays ~50deg)

They work well in high HP applications where heat and spark plug blowouts on the top end can be an issue.

does anyone know the difference between the bkr6eix and the bkr6eix-11? I really want to change mine out but am not sure which ones to get. I dont really need anything colder since im not tuned.

The difference between the two is in size they are pre-gapped from the factory. The -11 means they are pre-gapped at .044 or something similarly huge for our cars. You normally want to start with something pre-gaped nearer to the gap you are shooting for. There is a good link on the subject. I'll see if I can find it.

ok not to change the subject but I am running BKR6E with my APR 1+ with Bosch TT injectors. I don't think it is running very well and when it starts to boost i hear a spark knock (I think maybe, its some kind of cracking noise even worse when it is hot outside). Should I be using BKR7E?

You can try but don't be surprised if you have cold startup issues in UT winter, especially if you park your car outside... You should not be getting spark knock with that setup. You need to log to see what is really going on if you think your car is not running optimally. How many miles you have on those 6E's?

    +1
It's a different car with these in at startup (but once warmed up it's fine) and quite embarrassing with people in the car. I don't care, I'm going back to the 6E in a few miles when I do my oil change. My boost isn't that high that I need to worry about detonation yet anyway.

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.

Gapping down didn't help the timing pull when I compared 2 different plugs in the same heat range... I run .032 FR5DTC's with the power levels I'm at. Never had an issue or found another plug with a smaller gap do any better.
