Tiptronic behavior - rpm drop in 2nd

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Not sure if this is an issue or not or simply how the Tip tranny should behave in manual override mode.

Coming from 1st and shifting into 2nd, I notice that when 2nd engages, the rpms drop by approx 200-300rpm. So when I shift to 2nd at 3000rpm, the rpms drop to say 2700rpm but then for a split second, it drops further by another 300rpm before the revs go back up again. It's almost as if power is being cut off in 2nd something similar to a Torque Management logic.

Is this normal in override mode? I do not notice the same in "D" or "S" modes.

    Thanks

Re: Tiptronic behavior - rpm drop in 2nd

Mine does something a little different.

If I switch from 1st to 2nd it revs to about 4000 then hesitates for just a second, then the revs keep going. The only time it doesn't do that is if I have it in first and I just bury it. But at anything less than WOT, I get a slight hesitation at around 4000 rpm.

Re: Tiptronic behavior - rpm drop in 2nd

Hope it's normal, I get it as well. Not to long agothere was a thread on this and I could of sworn it said something about 2nd gear having a double gear of some-sort which is why the revs drop. I'm sure someone can chime in with more information on this topic.

torque converter locking up it's a good thing. and kurt that hesitation u get at around 4k is normal mine does it too it is turbo lag, until enough boost is made it will do that.

I had a 3.0L with Tip and swore that 2nd had some sort of synchro set up....From what I could find, no such thing....It was weird.....

That's what I figured as well. Although sometimes I can't tell if it is the turbo or the dynamic throttle? I do baby her, and very rarely rev it up past 3500 rpm. My computer says I get 29.7 average mpg though...

i always make sure it's engaged before pushing down on the peddle. can't imagine it's too good to be in the power band really hard before it's locked up.

All - Thanks for the confirm that it's normal.

It sucks but at least now I know nothing's wrong. I love driving in Tip mode so guess just have to live with it.

I know, but I would rather have it on the 2.0TFSI. Imagine Quattro with S-tronic and a full GT35r turbo setup?

you can think of the TIP tranny is giving you a boost lag.
