For that much you could wait just a year (or less) and get a used 535xi wagon with a 6 speed. SWEET car, Id drive one in a heartbeat.

Up to $40k gets you two S6 avants (C5 though). You may be able to find a used C6 A6 avant for that amount, but those are not exactly the most fun (but very comfortable and sharp looking).

I don't know that you're going to get something extremely "fast." If you search, you'll always see someone complaining about a modded out 335, Evo, STi, etc. kicking some Audi ass.

That being said - if you really want the speed, then consider ponying up for a B6 or B7 S4 Avant, and then throw in the new VF/AWE Supercharger - an great condition S4 and the S/C will be about $40k. Or you can search for a killer Stage III B5 S4 Avant. There's some around - even on Ebay.

If an S6 is your thing (and they're great, don't get me wrong), as my buddy Milo said - you'll be in the C5, not C6.

Not sure what the asking price on this is anymore, but here's an imported C5 RS6 avant for sale...that will get you speed and space. Of course, may be a RS6 sedan isn't so bad either (even though there's no hatch) and I know those are in the $35k-40k range now.
