ok well im making the treck from diego to the bay(sf bay that is) for thanksgiving to see my family. Im also driving up with another friend and im not sure if i want to put the mileage on my car and instead on this volvo..

I know the drive will put at least 1k miles on my car but how much is that going to hurt it, is it even worth doing it or am i just going to run into more problems this way.. My car handled the drive down here fine but not sure if its worth it becuase we would both just rather take my car over the damn volvo

    122k
    97 12v
    stock clutch
    t-belt done at 85k
slight tick with engine speed after 3500k rpms not sure what it is but iv always had it. my friend that knows a lot about cars said it was normal...

also how bad is it for the car to be going like 80-85 for a few hours, at like 3700 rpm's in a v6?

    you'll be fine.

I've made the same trip at least twice in my 97 12v.
First time: I hit a curb hard and f'ed the suspension, got it fixed, but drove it home needing an alignment.
Second time: didn't realize my axle had the inner boot torn up badly, but I'm still on it. Also drove to SE Arizona like that. Sounds negligent, and it is, but I don't have the resources at the moment.

I am sure you will be fine. I just got back from a roadtrip. Dallas, Texas to Jacksonville, Florida and back. My car is a 00 1.8t with 131,XXX on the odometer and I had no problems. Not to mention we averaged at 106 MPH. My g/f was doing 120+ then the good ole' V1 started beeping, the Florida highway patrol clocked her at 87 and got a ticked. Better than 120 tho haha. Do you have a radar?

(Bloomsburg => Rowan => Philly => Rowan => Bloomsburg) X 2 . Two days apart. Then! Bloomsburg => Mt. Olive NJ => James Madison University in Harris(on)burg => Mt. Olive => Bloomsburg. All within a week.

Google says 1,568 miles. My bitch made it. I effin love her. AND NO TICKETS FROM COPS!

Biggest mistake: put regular gas in. I need new spark plugs now. Something happened and now it hesitates and it only happened after I put that gas in. New respect for her now though.

lol for real man, who knows which speed is best for our b5's? I wouldnt think cruising 85-90+ mph isnt to wonderful for our cars... What about like 80 mph? ok mileage and is fast enough to not wanna fall asleep or kill yourself on those strait freeways.

Whats the highest rpm's and longest trip you guys have taken?

Haha just be careful man. The highway patrol are dicks. They insisted that they should search the car but i refused. So they had the K9 walk around the car and then I was good to go. I'm glad they did not get to search it tho, I had tons of nitrous in the trunk!

Ive driven a full tank with the cruise on 80, which is about 4k rpm in my 1.8T dub, so about 450-475 miles @ 4k rpms... I've done 130-140mph for a few minutes at times... She still purrs, just change the plugs and oil every 5k miles and shes good to go always!

    Re: Road Trip

yea ill prob keep it around 80-85 sometimes 90 so ill be around 3750-4000k rpms. cruising some time over 4k rpm's on the freeway would scare me a little bit. I dont think i should worry i have plugs that have less then 10k miles on them, fresh mobil 1 0-40, clean air filter with good tires, allignment, suspen. parts BESIDES my stock shocks and springs that are completely shot!!

wow those ******s need to go ASAP!

For our (12v) car's, best speed to achieve best MPG is around 74/76. 65 is horrible and 80 is only marginally better. But that's assuming mine is running "normal" if yours is in better shape, it may be different, but similar.
Now if you're only talking time...80 mph is 1.333 mi/min....so, 120 sounds good

i dont understand why you wouldnt think 70 mph gets better mileage then going 75 mph. A good amount more of wind drag there.

It's doubtful that you'll have a motor problem, they're designed to run like that. My bet would be having a wheel bearing problem. We went NY-Fl straight on, pretty steady 85 the entire way in my 04 Jetta 1.8 wagon. Needed a wheel bearing when I got back to NY. The trip was in 05, the car only had like 20k on her too.
