headed to track this weekend.... thinkn' bout runnin!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so iam heading to M.I.R for imports vs domestics this weekend an may just run the car to see what she's got..... but first i have a few questions,

    1) Tire pressure? I've seen people say 40-50psi in ea, correct???? I know i will add a few pounds to ea but that seems like alot?
2)Race gas.... maybe some 100oct, or 104... i do have stg 2 unitronic and tp, think it is safe to run something like that?
3)Any tips in general for car set up, i've been to the track a few times prior with my gli but with the awd i know it is different fwd.
4)any thoughts on what you think it may run? high 14's is pretty much what i expect.. or hope for. I will be crying if that dosent happen.
    thanks!!!

I've tracked the A4 extensively before it was sold, here are what worked for me:

Tire pressure: Assuming this is 1/4 mile, you'll want less psi for a bigger contact patch.

Race gas: The car will definitely feel faster with race gas and its definitely fun to put this in, so long as the car was already pulling timing.

Well everytime i have been at the track you loose tire pressure because you dont want wheel hop when you launch

Re: headed to track this weekend.... thinkn' bout runnin!!!

I run about 50psi in my tires when I go to the dragstrip.

Main reason, is because you want all the tires to break loose. If you don't have that much power, it's going to be pretty hard to get 3,500 pounds and Quattro moving from a standstill.

Think about it, fwd and rwd people know their tires are going to spin a lot, and they want them to grab as good as possible so they run a tad lower air pressure. Us Quattro guys get power to all 4 tires instead of 1 maybe 2, and we want our tires to break loose so we don't bog down or just slip the clutch.

Take out your spare tire, have as little gas in your tank as you need (1/8 tank or something), make sure your car cools off between runs, and practice launching before you go. I would dump my clutch at about 3,200rpm, and all 4 of my tires would break loose and grab right away at the track. Try this on the street when nobody else is around, and get the hang of it.
    Ignorance is bliss.

Well when you get going traction is not an issue, and the less on the pavement the better (less friction).

My tracking (not 1/4 mile)experience has been that you want lower tire pressure, the air will expand in your tires due to much higher temperatures that normal driving.

Is Mr.Audi talking about a 1/4mi race, or autocross?

1/4 mile... m.i.r Maryland International Raceway. That is what i thought about the tire pressure, i dont have enough power to break them loose i dont believe but i dont want to just bog down and go no where off the line.

Phrost, do you "side step the clutch", or kinda ride it to get it moving and then dump it? or do you just pop it and go.

I just let off as fast as I can, so I call it "dumping" the clutch. You don't need to ride/slip the clutch unless you had a lot more power, or if you have the Haldex Quattro which we do not. Seriously, try it out at a stop sign once or twice: turn off ESP, rev it to about 3,200-3,500, then dump the clutch. You will have everything out of your car and less than 1/4 tank of gas when you do this at the track, so you might bog a tad if you have a full tank or extra weight in the trunk.

But I couldn't bring myself to "side-step" my clutch. Snapping it like that doesn't sound good haha

My guess is more pressure = less contact with the ground = faster... at least that is the science when you race bikes (bicycles, that is), but then I never raced cars before...

Re: headed to track this weekend.... thinkn' bout runnin!!!

ok so i went ahead and ran the 1/4 @ m.i.r this weekend, i will have the official pic of the time slip up later but with the mods in my sig and 104 race fuel the b7 went 14.5 @ 97 mph... I cut a bad light so there is improvment to be made there, and the launch kinda bogged on me... But iam not mad. Once i get to really practice and get out a few more times high 13's shouldnt be an issue. More air in the tires(never even adjusted), no spare, and maybe an exhaust, got alot of love from the few audi/dubs that were there to!!!!

Did you spin your tires at launch? Looks like the 60ft can go down just a slight bit.

Re: headed to track this weekend.... thinkn' bout runnin!!!

You definitely need to rev it higher with your mods. 3,200-3,500 then dump the clutch, and get the feel for it from there. But 14.5 @ 97mph is not bad, I got a 14.4 when I completely bogged down on my first run too. Also, don't be afraid to "red light" it. .3 reaction time can be greatly improved, so remember to dump it a tad early right after the second to last light.

Try it again next time (or on a back road by yourself) with no spare, ESP off, 40-50psi in the tires, and a near empty tank.

Was it a pay/run track, or why did you only go once?

Re: headed to track this weekend.... thinkn' bout runnin!!!

^^^ you had to pay.. i only got one run because of the size of the classes, i could have got more but we got there 20 mins late and missed the first passes, we made the second pass, and then it was over 3 hrs between the 2nd-3rd passes so we partook to some adult beverages and when they called the 3rd pass i didnt want to take my car back out.... oh well, it will be better next time.

Re: headed to track this weekend.... thinkn' bout runnin!!!

Well don't get discouraged if you get a bad run. I had 2-3 horrible launches before I finally got it right with this car. Slipping the clutch is very hard to do, and not revving it up enough will just make you bog. Don't be afraid

The crowd loves seeing AWD launches, especially from a car that isn't riced out. I wasn't even winning a lot, and lots of people were cheering for me and giving me thumbs up after my runs haha. But that must be because it looked like I was beating 600 horsepower cars for a while because I always had a better launch.
    Ignorance is bliss.
