Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 98 AEB passat - KO4 with some other odds and ends. I have been working on pressurizing my system to listen for a boost leak in the engine bay.
So i couldn’t find a tennis ball and it was too late to go somewhere to build the boost leak tester soooo i hooked up the good ol dry vac and it seemed to work. I only left it on for about 10-15second intervals.
I am using the following link as reference:
    http://www.passatworld.com/forums/sh...ght=PCV+system
When i pressurize the system i can hear and feel the air coming out the PCV valve and or breather hose. I am going to replace the 4 check valves since im there and the PCV and the breather hose.
is it possible to loose boost pressure from this situation i described above?
Checked the DV, 2 vacuum tubes, hoses to the boost gauge and going to check the plugs tonite and make sure they are gapped properly. Im only boosting to around 15lbs in 1st gear..and in higher gears i hit around 17lbs. When i had the KO4 turbo with the KO3 software i was boosting at 17lbs in 1st gear & higher boost in the higher RPMs....
Neuspeeds site said their KO4 kit boost to 15lbs but i have read and had conversations with people that spike to around 19lbs and then it settles down a litttle. I know the boost dies fast after 5k but it seems like i hold a steady 15 no problem but it only holds to around 10lbs as i get in the higher rpms......
    thanks in advance
    Sean

Dude! Don't waste your time. Rip that shit out!
I had major shit with boost leaks all the time. After i took it out, had lots more space, and no leaks!

Wait, I am slammed with work and not thinking quite 100%, but what do you do to just "rip that shit out?"

I have been suspecting some of this stuff also..... but is there a PCV 'rip that shit out' DIY? haha, Ok, I will search!

There is a DIY under the B6 section, not 100% for the B5, but even in my drunken pissed off state i was able to get it right.

Re: Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

hmmm interesting!!! i was just goin to replace maybe teh check valves since im there but def the breather hose etc.
I hope that DIY is the same for the B5 as it is for the B6!! haha but obviously im not russing into anything. but i gota look into this as soon as i get home in 45 mins!!
I could care less about the space, its dead space under the IM IMO anyways but i do care ALOT bout boost leaks:)

anyone else have comments and or experience in deleting the PCV system for the B5???
    TIA

You can pretty much follow the DIY from the B6 section, my motor is an APU, so was a bit different, but the concept remains the same. Noticable difference after it was taken out. When i'm back home this weekend i'll take some pics of what mine looks like before i begin the teardown.

what type of difference did you notice? im def looking forward to more pics.
gota love printers at work...print at will, espically in color!! haha :) I havent gotten a chance to start reading though this removal but did you have to cap any tubes off or anything like that due to the removal of the PCV system?

Re: Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

Just to be clear to other readers, this will only work on AEB motors. On later models (AWM, ATW) the PCV breather runs all the way up to the valve cover as well as to the intake manifold, and will cause a boost leak if it is removed.

Re: Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

It's rather interesting, however wouldn't the CEL come on for not having the air pump?

Also if this on a B6, that isn't an AEB in the write up is it? I'd like to do this, all those hoses look brittle on my car. However I don't want to drive around with a CEL, just gets annoying...

or you could just fix the leak i fixed it on my 98 a4 and my brothers 99 a4 its just a small plastic hose that rips open over the years.

B6 motor is more like AWM / ATW.

Re: Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

If you go through the links i put in from the B6 section. Not just looking at the pictures, but actually read the stuff the guys have to say. You'll be able to understand what the system is and what it does. After this removing it isn't really an issue at all. The cells aren't anything a resistor in the right place can't fix. It simplifes things a great deal, you don't have to worry about boost leaks anymore. Mine didn't have the valve cover breather, so i had no problems there at all. The rest was very easy. I hold boost properly now, and higer than before, wastegate and DV operation is quicker as well. I don't see any cons to taking that system out. Just my two cents worth.

Re: Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

Well after reading I feel more confident but still unsure since the ATW has some differences from the B6 engine. Going to continue reading, but I am very sick of the boost leaks....

Re: Possible boost leak near PCV breather hose?

update --- replaced the breather hose & some other valve under the IM. was a PIA to get the rubber T fitting off that metal pipe that wraps around the back of the engine to the TIP but i have ALOT better idea now how to delete PCV system if i got that route. but there was a HUGE crack in the breather hose but still only boosting to 15pis or so in 1st gear. so the problem continues. but in higher gears i can boost to almost 19psi which make me think maybe i dont have a leak. but i thought boost should hold strong until around 5k or so but i dont think mine is. im going to pressurize the system again & see if i hear anything this time.
i know you dont wanna pressurize it the wrong way regarding the crank case. is it bad to take off the TIP from the air box and use that end to pressurize it from? TIA :)
