Re-check all your work and make sure nothing was left out. Also, when installing the intake, its good to let it idle for 10-15 minutes so the computer can adjust for airflow...

Prolly the MAF isn't seated right, which is why you got a check engine light and a sluggish engine?

I have the same k&n intake. I drove it for about ten minutes with no check engine light and then it came on. I turned it off and on a few times but that didn't help. I unplugged the positive on the battery for ten minutes, plugged it back in, and I haven't gotten a CEL since. I don't have an n75 or most of the other things you do, but give that a try and it should hopefully work.

Re: Open air intake FAIL.. slow/suffocating, check engine, and all the good stuff.. h

I've done this a few times... I put an open filter on the stock TIP just by removing the air box and putting it on after the MAF.

Then I re-did the whole intake with an APR TIP and I've never had a problem. I'm pretty sure you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check all the lines running to the TIP

I think I got mine for $75? and it felt a little bit more responsive, but that could very well have just been in my head. It definitely DID NOT feel more sluggish after.

k&N filter? I know these filters are have alot of oil and are pretty wet when taken out of the packaging. Did you install the filter right after you opened it or did you let it sit out over night to let the oil dry a little bit. Im just wondering if maybe some of the oil from the filter made its way onto your MAF sensor.

I bought the K&N cold air intake, which is basically just a filter on the MAF. I had a few difficulties. First, the instructions from K&N were quite possible the most poorly written instructions I've ever seen in my life and the pictures didn't help. But that was the first mod I ever did, so I didn';t know my way around the engine bay. Secondly, since I didn't order it, I got one for a "b6 a4 2001-2002.5" and I have a 2004. I didn't know about any changes from 2002 - 2003, so I went ahead with the install. The only two issues I had which, I assume, were contributed to that, were that the heatshield now only has one mounting point, but with a few nuts and lock washers, it holds. Secondly, the mount for the U bracket that holds the filter in place wasn't angled correctly so it took a vice and a BFH to get it into place. As stated before, I got a CEL, but that went away after I disconnected the battery for a while.

Also, stupidly and n00bish, I put my MAF back on backwards and threw some code for that. It took me about three seconds to realize what I did wrong ahahaha

I got an AEM Dryflow for like $48 from summit racing. Flow as good or better than the K&N and never needs oiling. I plan on mounting to MAF when installing my BT kit. The one other thing you might need is a small filter to put in the secondary air system when you Remove the stock airbox.
