    Synthetic Oil Questions

    Hey guys,

I'm due for another oil change. I'm the type of guy that would rather let the dealerships handle it since my time and confidence are pretty sparse. I have been going to Audi until now and using their synthetic oil. However, they're pretty far from my house and quite a hassle to get to. I was wondering if the nearby Volkswagen dealership will use the same oil. Audi told me their oil is a custom derivative of the Castrol Syntec oil specific for Audis, but perhaps that includes Volks?! I remember calling a while back and learning that the weight of their oil differed. Is that weird?

    Re: Synthetic Oil Questions

I wouldn't worry too much about what kind of synthetic you use. It's probably just another way for the stealership to convince you to pay them $90 for an oil change. Indy shops are fine as long as you trust them.

    Re: Synthetic Oil Questions

I wouldnt worry about it, its probably even cheaper at the vw dealership. I know that where I live the audi dealer charges a lot more for the same parts the vw dealer has

My local VW dealer recently stopped cross referencing parts bcs they said Audi dealerships were complaining about the loss of business... go figure they think they got us over a barrel thank goodness for the Internet.

After my car got off the free scheduled maintenance I would buy my own synthetic oil and take it to an independent who would charge $15 to perform the job. Then one day I needed to get the job done and I couldn't wait. Quick lube raped me $45+ with my own oil. Next time I bought me some ramps and an oil pan for $45 and then have done my oil changes 5 times now. Its good to know u've done the job urself and then know:

    1) The oil's in there
    2) Not overfilled
    3) Oil filter not overtightened/loose
    4) Oil drain bolt not overtightened/loose
    5) Fresh washer on the oil drain bolt.

My oil of choice is Royal Purple
I get my washers and oilfilters from ECSTuning.com ... but then this is just me

    Re: Synthetic Oil Questions

lol, cross reference before you get there :P Screw Audi dealership prices, if they want to charge more for the same thing, they SHOULD lose business.

I agree fully on doing you own oil. plus the old stuff you can just take to the quick change shops and they dispose of it for you.

vw dealership should be fine. and the larger oil filter is the same one they use for passat and is cheaper than the audi dealership. i buy my own oil and then have them do it sometimes.

I've been changing my own from day one with the same set up as above. Order bulk filters from ecs or somewhere and you're good. Just did mine this past weekend and it takes about 30 minutes but that's mainly because i take my time and always screw around with the plastic skid pieces the never align right the first time. Also put some new plugs in as well. I don't understand how people pay dealerships to do this type of stuff when it's so easy and i only spend 35 bucks. NEVER take your audi to the quick lube places they will rip you off and they do shit work.
