    DIY Timing Belt Video?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok, So I am going to be doing a timing belt on an 01 A4 1.8T here in a few weeks for a friend. I was wondering if any of you would be interested in buying, for a low price, a DIY video showing you step by step how to do it. I would send it out via DVD or download link.

If there is enough interest I will spend the extra time to do this.

    Let me know!

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

I think there is too big of a gap between DIY people and 'take it to the mechanic' people for the video to get many takers... the DIY guys will just print out the walk through, and hte others will just pay out the ass to have it done for them.

Good idea, but I don't think it'd go over well... If you don't do it, I'll video tape my timing belt swap in 40k miles and post it up on here. lol.

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

TDi club sells a DIY timing belt vid for doing belts on a tdi. They are 20 bucks and the money goes towards the forums.....I'm not sure on sales, but I'm pretty sure they sell a bunch.

I bought one when I owned a TDi.

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

well, i am needing a timing belt, and if i can save $500 by doing it myself... i think i would be willing to pay $10 or $15 for a video on the whole process step by step!!

i have some ideas for you if you want them

    like

inbetween every major part your doing (i.e. taking off the front bumper or something like that) stop the movie and edit in a title screen for whats going to be done, and if its on DVD you should be able to put each of those breaks as a different chapter.

but yeah, ill buy one for sure

If someone brought me a B5, I would change there belt well they video taped, I think timing belt is pretty self explanatory myself.

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

$500 for a cambelt change...? WTF?!?!?!
Ok, now i understand about making a proper step by step video and selling it.
Here in South Africa the guys do it for like 1/4 that price, but they always fuck it up! So onward! Record away!

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

Yeah I was planning on doing a lot more for it than just tape and burn to DVD. There would be a lot of different step by step things in there title screen wise. I have been doing movies for a VERY long time (8-9 years now) so I have the experience.

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

i think its a good idea.. i personally wont need it or have the need to buy it but sometimes a write-up doesnt give you the full confidence. seeing someone do it and walk you through it step by step would make it a bit easier for those that are on the wall wondering if they are capable enough or should they just pay to get it done. here in NY a timing belt job can run you about 700 for just labor. 12-1500 at the dealer for parts and labor. a 15 buck vid will definitely help someone out

Well Josh I would say you have some mechanical background or are smarter than the average bear... Im a mechanic for a living and you should see some of the shit people bring in on trailers that they f'd up... I would like to keep timing belt jobs off that list if possible lol

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

I think the video idea is great, but I would just do it for free. I'm thinking about attempting this soon and would love to see a walk through. But doubt I would pay with the other avenues available. I'd rather just read for free. If you posted it up on youtube or something like that and just wanted to be nice and put it up there, then I would definitely watch and be appreciative of your efforts for the Audi community.

Best of luck to you. if you do decide to record it and post it up for free, please let us know. I'd be eager to watch.

    Re: DIY Timing Belt Video?

i agree with 317ssayzarc and a4rob. a diy'er can do it without a video (though it would be nice), and the guy that needs a video shouldnt be doing it. there is also a couple diy vids online as others have stated. 5-min t/b job comes to mind. this thread is old so it may actually be that video :S
