$1500 at Rennology motorsports. That the most you want to pay. There some shop that do it for less than $1000 but I didn't want a bunch of teenagers working on my car!

Dude, you guys are getting hosed.

The shop I work at does 1.8T A4's for <$800.

we all do side jobs though, and that's considerably less.

Post up in your local forum here on Audizine. There are a lot of Audi and V-Dub techs who do it for >300.

I'll give it a shot next 60k, time was more my issue. I've done belts before with no issue but they were all non-interference so the threat was never there either.

im 20 and ive yanked the motor out 2 times and did the timing belt job twice and even put new fenders, C/O's welded an exhaust, and even get paid to detail peoples car. haha

you have to know the reputation of the teenager working on the car and even the shop. messing up a timing belt is a big OOPS

Better safe than sorry. Let's just say I don't trust shops (dedicated to Audi, bmw, vw) in Chicago. And...
    1. I would not do timing belt myself
    2. I don't know anyone that can do it for me and
    3. There are cases where shops state they have changed water pump (which should be done at the same time) and they didn't or something else that should've been changed.
So, there, everyone makes their decisions based on the circumstances.

1)Thats because you dont know how to work on your car. LEARN, its alot of fun!!!!
2)Start socializing, post on the thread thats around your area here on AZ.
3)If you can find a local memeber to help you change the WP, you can be there en see that it is being changed.

When i work on customers car, i let them bring me the parts, or tell them where to order and what to order. and i give them back the old parts to assure them that it has been done.

I bought my kit from ECS for like $300 and paid the dealership $525 for installation. I bought the complete timing belt kit with all belts and new thermostat.

75% of the time, it's only fun when you get to do it at your own pace and not 45+ hrs/wk.

I charge 350 labor for B5's, but that must be because Im 19.

Ive only done maybe 20 timing belts on longitudinal 1.8T's/V6's and another 10 or so on transverse 1.8t's... But I think that's plenty to be trusted with a basic tb/wp side job. I mean, I have people wanting me to do full drivetrain builds and I have two cars at the shop with 15k+ builds, so I guess I'm still unqualified to do your wp/tb...

Not trying to be mean, but please think before you sterotype... Thanks

Re: How much to get your timing belt done?

got mine done last week for under $800 Canadian at local Euro Independent shop.

note: My engine is AVK-3.0 (labour $300). They did a lot of 1.8T's for $250.

Parts are under $300 for 1.8T.
    including:
    - 1 Heavy Duty Water Pump
    - Timing belt
    - Accessory belt (recommanded to be replaced at 120k km interval by audi)
    - 1 Timing Belt Tensioner Idler
    - 1 Timing Belt Tensioner Damper (w/ Integral Roller)
    - 2 valve cover gasket (this usually start to leak after 5 years)
    - 1 Camshaft Seal
    - 3 Liters of coolant G12

since your engine is 01 1.8T.
ur engine may be "Engine Code AWM (Early VIN Vehicles)"
    than later year's 1.8T.

Re: How much to get your timing belt done?

i did my timing belt twice on my own....and wasn't very mechanically inclined at ALL when i first did it in 2004. Actually i didn't even own a toolbox, so I bought one of those $30 cheap sets from Pepboys....and it did the trick. Parts only ran me about $250.

Did my 2nd timing belt late 2006, and getting ready to do my 3rd soon.

I say try saving the money and DIY. I followed the Tech Articles on AW, and it worked flawlessly.

im 17, Ive done a lot of timing belt jobs on my own cars, as well as my families and friends cars (At least 20 over the past 2 years) anything from golf GTI 2.0's, to audi S4 2.7's...as well as did a full stage 3 build on my friends S4 in Poland.....even on the old audi 10V turbo and non turbo engines.....

usually takes me about 5 hours to do....and that includes oil change, all seals replaced, new plugs and wires/caps.

    thanks for stereotyping.

i did it myself with a few ppl pointing things out...ahem...clint...ahem...did it at a very chill pace...stopped for burgers, check out other ppl's cars, screwed up a few times. took me 9 hours at that, but competent people who are dedicated can finish it in far less time.

i say try it on a free saturday or sunday. i learned so much about my car, i'd gladly sacrifice the blood and sweat for the experience all over again.
