newbee: Loud powersteering ?

So i recently purchased an 04' Audi A4 1.8T and the (I believe) power steering pump is obnoxiously loud. And I'm talking like louder than the motor itself.

I am familiar with the 1.8T and noticed a similar noise when auto-crossing a 20th. But this is constant.

People tell me this is normal and the car seems to be running just great. Should I be worried? Or be checking anything out?

check the fluid. im actually going to the dealer right now to have mine checked because it's being very loud even though i topped up the fluid

you need fluid. look at the stick on the cap, you dont fill it all the way to the top

Why would the fluid be low anyhow. There must be a leek for the fluid to be low. No?

So i just went out and checked the lever. Seems fine. Could this be something else?

It is constant. Not just when steering. And is is a whining sound.

Is anyone aware of how much the Steering Pump repair is?

mine did that....and it was just low on fluid...and no apparent leaks because fluid levels havent really changed since then.

just got back from the dealer... my pump was whining even when driving in a straight line. I was thinking the pump is on it's way out... the fluid level was fine buy they said the fluid was dirty. since my car has 70,000 miles on it i decided to just let them flush it and if that doesnt fix the problem then they have to fix it because the car is cpo. Its totally quiet now and doesnt even make that whining noise when you turn full lock... i had to pay 125 for the flush though...

Mine does this too like 50% of the time. Most likely because the belt design of my S/C. I can feel it in the wheel sometimes too, I'm going to look to have it flushed maybe.

Maybe I'm in need of a flush. but at 20K miles that is a bit odd to me. The sound is really ban and always whining. Straight line or full turn.

I agree, this is different than the 1.8T

my SW occasionally whines and feel weird. nothing is wrong

This was a bad Power steering pump BTW. It whined all the time. Not just when turning.

The a4 is known to do this when its cold. Ive takin it to the dealership service sations and had it flushed. now that its getting warmer see if it changes. Mine has quit since the weather changed
