VAG-COM and Vista

ANyone running Vag-com with windows vista? I bought a new laptop and my old software will no longer work. I was thinking about picking up one of those ebay scanners just to clear codes. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. TIA

i use vag com with vista without any issues. what part of the software doesnt work or is it entirely? mine doesnt find the cable unless im running it as an administrator

I run the latest (Ross-tech) on Vista and no problems at all.

in vista, you might need to enable to program to "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" for your computer to allow it to run... reason is, vag-com isn't a certified windows program...

^^ agreed only if User Account control is on, if you have that function off (on by default) then you don't need to do that

no, 100 is for the pro version the free is just as good

I currently have Vista Ultimate and every time I try and open VAG COM it says it encountered an error, I have tried to reinstall and run as administraror and I still have the same problem. Anyone have any more suggestions.

BTW I have an ebay cable with the free 409.1 s version of VAG COM, also running the 64 bit vista. The drivers are installed properly I just cant get VAG COM to open.

My solution has been to run in a Virtual Machine running an older OS.
Any VM that can pass through or access the real COM port should work.
I'm using Virtual PC which is a free download from Microsoft now (note: you still have to have a licensed copy of the older OS you want to run in the VM).

Even running as admin I had a problem with running it on vista. The program either would not open or it would freeze as soon as you try to do anything. That was on vista ultimate.

i tried to get it working on vista business but it just won't work. also tried virtual os but couldn't get the com to go through. i eventually just partitioned a 10gb space for xp lol.

if it's still not working, you can go into the properties of the program (right click on it) and tell it to run in "Compatibility Mode"

I set the COM port on my real machine to the port I wanted to use for the cable, then I set the same port on the VM to use the real COM port and it passed straight through.
I even believe that the drivers only had to be installed on the host OS and not on the VM since it is just seeing a COM port and not the USB to COM bridge/adapter that the host OS is running.

Anyway, glad you got it to work with a separate partition for XP.

Well, yes, it needs to be in the OBDII port, but I presume you mean plugged in to the lighter? Not required, but your battery has to have a minimum resting voltage (I forget, but maybe 10.4) for VAG to work correctly.

I meant into the obd 2 port under the dash. I try to open it on my laptop and it wont so i was just wondering if it had to be plugged in. The reason i ask is because I downloaded the software but the cable hasnt made it in the mail yet.

like STUBBS said - I had to set compatibility mode with my vista (set to XP).

I have one issue with using my new laptop/vista/USB converter... i lose connection once i start the car (is it an ecu issue - since i'm running new programming - or the usb to serial connection does not allow for logging?)

Yeah. I am running 64bit. i have done most of the suggestions ie compatability mode. i haven't done the vm suggestion. don't have the keys for my xp version.

on my xp machine, when i run the test on com 4 (which is where the cable is set to) I get the blue screen of death. If i go to device manager and set the cable to com 1, i get the bsod again. I think my xp machaine is about on its last leg anyway. Any help with either xp or vista would be appreciated.

Success on the xp machine. I think I had the wrong driver. I went to http://www.autonostics.com/pages.php?pageid=3 and got the right driver. also got the window mode done.
