    Rear Speaker Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i recently just bought my first audi a4 1999.. but i have a slight problem with the rear speakers as they dont go at all. Ive look under them from the boot and they wire looks all good, although its more confusing than my old bmw as the left speaker has a hell of alot more wires than the right for what reason??

I have taken out the sony headunit and all wireing looks correct i think, i have even tested another spear speaker with the wiring that leads to the rear but from the head unit side an it works..

is there anything i can do, or do audis have some sort of way around this as i am very new to this type of car?? its not the fader on the stereo

hoping that i can fix this rather than paying a tech to,

    thanks

    Re: Rear Speaker Help

the wires on the left rear speaker are going to the amp that powers it. You have an aftermarket head unit so I assume they bypassed that amp somehow. You most likely need new speakers...easiest fix and worth it anyways since you have that sony headunit.

    Re: Rear Speaker Help

This happens with every B5 that gets a head unit upgrade. The factory head sends a weak ass signal to the rear speaker with all the wires on it. That speaker amps it and sends a stronger signal to the other side. Since the speakers expect a low signal they don't work with the aftermarket head. Burner is right, just buy some new 2-way coaxials or something reasonable since its just rear fill and run some new wires back there.
No time to mod with so many things to fix...

ok cool thanks guys makes sence,

if i did a basic straight swap of the speakers with some new ones would this solve it? or as you^ said the wiring needs to be changed aswell?

no no. if you swap in some coaxials, just get the signal wires connected properly and you will be fine....

    Re: Rear Speaker Help

Best bet is to do all speakers at the same time, get a 4-channel amp to power them and use RCA cables from the head unit (if applicabale) for input.

    Re: Rear Speaker Help

So it was a new wiring harness adaptor to the aftermarket head unit that solved your problem? I have the same problem...where the rear speakers never or barely work, unless it is at high volume. The speakers seem fine for being 10 year old factory...but like others, just don't have the extra cash to upgrade speakers.

    Re: Rear Speaker Help

yeh i never got any sound of them at all but basically the guys just chucked in a new harness adaptor and that solved the problem..no need for wiring or new speakers..
