    DIY battery removal?

Any tricks out there at to getting the behemoth OEM battery out of its shell? You have to take out all the plastic covering, right? Any magic to getting to the out of reach hold-down bolts?

    Re: DIY battery removal?

I just did mine on Saturday.
there is one 6mm hex bolt in the front center of the battery, remove it and the clamp comes out.
the problem is if you have sport suspension, then the strut bar is over-top the bolt. I had to take the strut brace bar out first(2 bolts on each side, 1 in the middle) then the battery pops right out-with a hernia

It comes right out. It's not bolted or clamped down or anything.

Remove the rubber seal at the firewall, just pull it forward and the plastic shield that covers the ECU, brake reservoir, and battery compartment can then be removed.

Do you lose all your settings when you pull the battery, such as radio stations, compass, homelink, etc? Also concerned about all my GPS destinations....

    Re: DIY battery removal?

Here is what the Bentley manual says:
    Note:
-When reconnecting battery, activate vehicle equipment (radio/radio navigation system, clock, electric window lifters) in accordance with Owners Manual.
-On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar (R) , switch on emergency (back-up) battery Communication - Repair Group 91 .
-Further measures after reconnecting the voltage supply, refer to applicable engine repair manual, repair group 24.
-Check proper function of remote control keys; adapt keys if necessary. Inform customer that all additional keys must also be adapted to ensure that the remote control works properly Owners Manual .
-After re-connecting battery, the ESP indicator lamp will go out only after driving a distance of several meters.
I didn't see anything special in the engine repair section except to clear any codes in memory. Details about the radio weren't clear either, but you may have to connect a VAG-COM device and re-code the radio; seems like this was only if the system was replaced...

I have a strut brace on my '04 A4 and was just able to take the battery out without removing the brace. If you loosen the bolt all the way on the front clamp so that the clamp can slide side to side, then push it all the way to the passenger side, you should be able to position it just underneath the brace, allowing you to yank the battery out.

Also, go to AutoZone or somewhere else and buy the $5 battery backup tool that plugs into the 12V outlet. Pop in the supplied 9V battery, plug it in and you're golden.

    Re: DIY battery removal?

I used something similar to this:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TN2BFA?...0&linkCode=asn

I got suckered into buying two from Sky Mall. Not sure if it did anything, but I didn't lose my settings or anything. Car fired right up.
