    FMIC VS Crash_Bar or Compromise

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok, so I’ve had my FMIC on for the fast few months and I continue to worry about the adverse affects of not having the stock crash bar. By saying adverse, I am referring to potential harm to myself and the car as a result of removing this bar in efforts to gain power(great rule of thumb, make it faster but be sure to take away safety if it happens to "get in the way"). For the record, I have a Greddy FMIC… I know I know.. But I think that I am going to switch over to AWE this spring pending the results of Q #2.

    Q's for all:

1.Has any one tried to rig the stock crash bar to fit with a FMIC.

2.Is there any chance that the AWE setup can exist with some sort of brace (knowing that there is not a chance for the stock to be manipulated what so ever).

    3. Any clue how “beefed” up a solution should be in order to provide some sort of protection to the engine bay?

Opinions are welcomed, I don’t think that it’s the best call to keep this setup the way it is now.

If you are an engineer now’s the time to chime in.

    Thanks in advance everyone!

Re: FMIC VS Crash_Bar or Compromise

Engineering has nothing to do with this.

FMIC or the risk of you car being totaled in your first fender bender ?? (god forbid)

    Whats more important ?

that's the way i see it but im not an engineer yet...

awe sits behind the crash bar. In a crash the intercooler and radiator with probably be damaged though.

i'm pretty sure most of the FMIC's for the B7's fit with the crash bar. AWE, GSG, pretty sure racetec.

the gsg one fits as well, thats what I am rocking with no problems...I was hesitant to run a fmic without a rebar, just cause if you do hit someone the accident will be worse than normal!!!

    not really worth it

if you get into an accident and your crash bar is gone, will insurance still cover the damage?

Re: FMIC VS Crash_Bar or Compromise

This topic did not take to long. So I guess that I am the only one with fitment problems on my front mount.. interesting.

I will look for the install photos with the bumper off but i am currently in the middle of moving. The brackets match on the body fine, but the kit did not seem to like the S-line bumper. Have not gotten a chance to go back in again and try to refit it.

A fender bender is what it would take, its been parked most of the time for that reason.

As for waiting on getting a kit, I don't know what kind of temps you drive in, but the car felt solid when it was 90*, and into the 40's it feels great.. Well worth the investment aside from my install.

Sucks that your FMIC wont fit with the re-enforcement bar. You figure Greddy would make it so you wouldnt have to take it off. Not safe at all.

Re: FMIC VS Crash_Bar or Compromise

Removing the crash bar does 2 things.

    1. Fully voids your Audi warranty.
    2. Insurance will not cover any damages past the cosmetic bumper, so if you hit someone at a decent speed you're paying from the bumper back for the damages (ie radiator, frame etc). Also if someone in your car gets injured they or their family has an easy lawsuit against you.

Re: FMIC VS Crash_Bar or Compromise

I just did a review on a fmic, if you wanna check it out and if you have questions shoot me a pm.

Awe will fit behind the rebar, but you need to remove the rebar to install than put it back on, sometimes you need to trim some part behind the bumper that is not important. The GSG fits with no modification to rebar or bumper. Greedy you need to remove the rebar or do what Pete did (Auditude 2.0t), I hear race tech has no modification to rebar (or minimal), according to them. God speed is a Greedy replica, so ya no rebar.

Thats basically all the fmic's that are out, that I am aware of (could be wrong), well besides ebay FMIC's, but I just looked at godspeed not sure if new kits are out.

as I sad before, its never safe to drive without a rebar, but there are some people who are willing to do it. If you crash something minimal turns into something extreme. Hell, even having it glued will have some protection.

You could cut the inside of the bar to fit the greedy, but that would basically compromise the integrity of the rebar..so its ultimately it is like not having nothing.

    hope this helps!

    Randy,

I was thinking of doing that but after reading some of the posts I think im going to go a different route. The thing that I am worried about is the insurance issue if I begin to alter the original crash bar regardless of the "new" integrity. I think that Im going to scrap this FMIC for the AWE. BTW I cant seem to find it right now, but the car that was advertised with the Greddy FMIC did not have the S-line bumper which might play a role in my fitting issue.. Just a thought.
