Any B5 S4 Specific Boost Leak Test DIY?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Searched the usual sites but couldn't come up with anything specific to the B5 S4, or even with a twin turbo setup?

I've boost leak tested my DSM a billion times but the setup was much more convenient, just pull off the air filter and cover the actual turbo inlet with the tester to diagnose.

I can only imagine that since we do not have access to the turbos that the only method would be through the Y-pipe opening?

    Thanks.

Re: Any B5 S4 Specific Boost Leak Test DIY?

Anyone know off hand what size diameter I would need to make one?

What would be a 'safe' value to pressure test to? 25 psi?

I'm currently running a GIAC X chip, so I would definitely want to test up to 20 psi.

Would this method find leaks in the DV's specifically?

Sorry to bring back an old thread but not finding much information. I made my little tester with a gauge and what not. The system doesn't build any pressure at all. I have the oil fill cap off and can here the oil bubbling? Does this mean that I'm low on compression?

It's not supposed to build pressure. You run a sustained pressure through the intake to expose any leaks. The bubbling is normal.

EDIT: I just reread that you aren't getting any pressure at all. What's your air source?

Maybe the gauge on your tester isn't working? It sounds like pressure is going through the intake from your description.

I'm going to get plugs for the charge pipes and pressurize it to there and see if it holds anything; If the guage still isn't reading I will try a different one. There was quite a large hole in one of the charge pipes (maybe 1.5 inches by .5 inches) that was fixed but only brought me up maybe 2 psi.

Make sure you've plugged the PCV port (see my above pic) - just in case you missed this detail.

I just bought the turbo boost leak testers device. I have used my DIY version a few times, but the PVC part frequently popped out. It hasn't been very useful, and this thing isn't that much more than the DIY parts.

I like the gauge and valve fitting to hold the pressure and then check for leaks. I haven't checked the pressure yet, but with an OTD approaching I should. Ironically, it shipped from right down the road from here.

I would hear the bubbling noise when using my DIY unit. I never felt very confident it told me anything. The bubbling is kinda loud and makes air leaking sounds hard to find. That or i don't have any. We'll see if seeing gauge movement helps.

I have done some pressure tests now with the turboboost... device. I seem to be getting less loss than the 1PSI/s the guide above describes (http://www.turboboostleaktesters.com...101/Categories).

I timed my air loss at about 16 psi per minute. I could not hear any air noises aside from the bubbles in my oil. I'm going to call it and say I don't have a leak.
