Technique for cleaning door jams to avoid getting water inside the car?

    Detailing masters, I need advice:

How do you clean the door jams without getting soap/water into the car's interior? Washing them is simple enough with a mitt, but how do you get the suds off? I definitely avoid cleaning the jams on a regular basis b/c of this problem. Its especially problematic on the rear hatch on an avant. In the past I've basicaly just turned down the water pressure for a very slow stream and removed the nossle, so that I have just a little water pouring out. Even then, I still manage to get water in the car.

    Thanks for any tips!
    Jon

no tips, but if you scrub up the jambs once really good, you should be able to just wipe/dry them when you wash the car. i've ownd my car for over 5 years and only used soap in my jambs twice. they look showroom new.

i very rarely "wash" the door jambs...i only do it if its pretty nasty...otherwise, i'll just wipe them clean witha damp microfiber towel, or spay a mild degreaser if you have caked on dirt or grime. No need to go overboard with steam or spraying it with a hose...keep it simple..

Turn down the water pressure, a small amount of water wont hurt anything...just lay down towels if you're worried.

I use a firehose nossle which allows me to adjust pressure also

Twista has some good advice. For me I would not use a hose. But like alan said the fire hose nozzle would be okay with it turned almost all the way off with just a little spraying out. Or use a waterless car wash if you are very paranoid.

As will stated about a waterless carwash...one i recommend, which isnt really waterless, you just use limited amount of water...Optimum No Rinse-I use this in winter when its freezing out. Everyone praises this stuff...as do it!

Like has been said...clean it thoroughly once, and after that it's just maintenance. I keep a spray bottle of pre-mixed Optimum No Rinse on hand and use this for door jams and in the trunk lid area. I use it on every detail job.

Thanks for the advice guys. It sounds like there is no easy way to wash the jams using actual soap and water, and that wiping them down between thorough detailings is the norm.

As usual, there is no magic secret. Oh well.

    Thanks everyone!

Re: Technique for cleaning door jams to avoid getting water inside the car?

I wash my jambs every second wash or so. I wring out my wash mitt so it's not flinging soap around while I'm washing. Then I use a dribbling hose to rinse, letting the water trickle over the jambs. I only get water inside if I twitch or something , but I keep a MF towel handy to dab any splashes or drips that might get in.
