I got a nail in a tire and unfortunately can't buy a new rim/tire set at the moment so I need some help...

I have kumho ecsta asp but those things don't last past 30k miles, im at 20 and they are near being toast.

What is an affordable tire you guys would recommend that would last me a while?

I don't care too much about performance since i don't track it or anything....I just want something safe, lasting, and relatively affordable.

    opinions?

EDIT: those of you in need of some tires for your stockers.. sweet deal. I know its winter, but some of us dont have snow...

Re: I know there are tons of threads on tires...but

I was recommended Discount Tire Direct by onemoremile. Very good prices, unless you find an ad in the paper for buy 3 get the 4th tire free. Those deals are always great. But browse thier inventory for the size you are looking for and you should come across a good deal. As for specific brand/model to go with, other will need to chimme in.

Re: I know there are tons of threads on tires...but

FWIW, I run the Bridgestone HP550. I have yet to have a personal complaint about them. The guy at Sears said that this is thier new design and it replaced a model I can not recall. I actually bought them maybe 2 days before first arrival and they had a sale for buy 3 get the 4th free, so I jumped on it. I will edit later with the treadwear warranty mileage. I just need to get it from my vehicle.

Re: I know there are tons of threads on tires...but

okay so it wasn't a nail, i was just typing fast. It was some shrapnel of metal from a tool or something being used on the construction site at my school....created a puncture over an inch long.

    I found 205/50 16 tires Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

for 56 dollars a piece, 40 dollars shipping = 300 and another 50 dollar manuf. mail in rebate.

brings me to 250+ installing and stuff...

what do you guys think? worth running over a 205/55?

EDIT: HOLY SHIT...america's tire want's 193 per tire for the same one! wtf???

Re: I know there are tons of threads on tires...but

Good for snow. I hear those tires wear fast though. But despite the whole "Quattro requires you to get all new tires bla bla bla..." I would just buy a tire to match what you already have. Then wait and get something really worth getting after winter passes.

    I don't know. It's your call.

Re: I know there are tons of threads on tires...but

my two fronts are at like 4/32's and my rears are like 6/32's with one punctured. puting on a single new one would probably not be a good idea.

I have no snow here, rain occasionally, but nothing quattro can't handle. what i just posted is a summer tire...what do you think? is running 205/50 instead of 55 going to be a huge difference?

Good point. and 55 won't make much of a difference. Just the side wall will be a little wider. At the end of the day, you'll have new tires.

i guess i will order these for 55 a piece while i still can get my hands on them. with road and hazard and mail in rebate it comes to 240 at my door. If i can get them mounted and balanced on the cheap through some freinds then i call that a deal.

Those wheels are praised by many as being the best street summer tires at a reasonable price (yet still pricey, but you happened to stumble upon a deal). I would get them.

dangerous... i drove my car on the eagle f1's in light snow during spring. with awd you can get the car up to speed, but you'll slide through turns, etc. if there's any ice, forget about it.

    +1

A friend of mine runs these tires during the summer and his car isn't quattro(01 Jetta) The thing feels like its on rails and he just has a simple sport suspension setup. I'd say for that price and the mounting and balancing deal, you can't pass these up.

I rock all seasons for Pa winters. I don't drive on the streets unless they plowed. I used to run winters, but they just wore away way too fast. I usually just skip school and work at home if the roads are bad. The pa drivers are just terrible. I won't want to get rear ended because someone doesn't know to brake. My falkens ziex 512s were great in the snow for all seasons. They didn't brake very well, but how many snow tires are good for braking anyways?

I had a set of F1's. Great handling tire, mine were 17's, so not $56. More like $176. My rears didn't last for shit. And for the price there was no way I was getting them again. They're not recommended for cold temps, never mind snow or ice.

a little over 9k on them and the fronts are shot but thats my fault for beign to lazy to take in for alingment. The rears still look almost brand new, barely any where on them. I will be getting them again, so i would reccomend them.

Launch??? haha im still stock my winter tires launch as hard as any tire when you barely have over 150 hp lol. FWIW they have held and launched good everytime i have but i still have stock power so thats not saying much but they are a very predicatble tire when they do break traction in corners.

Also the fk452s are virtually silent, there is pretty much no road noise and IMHO they are a very grippy tire, yet when pushed to the limit they are very prediactable as opposed to some tires which feel like once grip breaks your on ice.

I'm on my second set of Falken 452's. I'm running a 255/35/18 with no complaints. Super grippy, awesome in the wet, people have ran 11's at the strip with this tire. It's a very good tire for the price. The next step up would be the Conti's or PS2's, which cost $300+ each. The 452 gets in my book.

so with road hazard insurance and shipping, it came out to $290 and I'll get another 50 dollar mail in rebate. Figure about 80 bucks to get em mounted and balanced sooo set of these tires is coming out to 320. No place could match tire racks price.

also, they are old. Tire rack is totally awesome and called me and talked to me about it before they shipped them out. They have just been sitting in their wharehouse. I'm sure they will be fine, and for the price...there's nothing else i could buy.

I feel for you guys with snow...sucks. We barely even get rain here so should be okay.

i had goodyear eagle f1's in 235/35/19 and 3 of the 4 literally tore apart on me, the sidewall ripped off of the tread part. horrible tires and they were over 200 each at the time!!

i wish i still had pics. they were on my old phone......i've bought Nexen N3000's after that for 400 for all 4 and think they are better (even though it's supposed to b a cheap brand). they've lasted me a while now and havent fallen apart, and they hav good performance

I like my F1's. But then again, I've had my car for just over 3 months and haven't seen snow yet. They perform well in the dry and wet from what I've experienced so far.
