BlinkTek heatshiel, What a piece of

Awesomeness....it works exactly as described...i took a 7 minute drive home from the gym and went in the house for probably a good 20 minutes...went out to the car and felt the airbox...decently warm still, enough to give a little sting...i installed the heatshield, which pretty much dropped right in and fits pretty good...a few hours later i went for my 25 mile drive to work which consists of highway and city...as soon as i got to work i felt the airbox which was cool-semi cool depending on where you touched

as far as performance: either in my head or not, the car seemed noticeably more responsive, whereas on my way to and from the gym, it seemed a little more sluggish...and my gas needle didnt move as much as it usually does, ill have to determine better mpg after a couple of drives to work

customer service was top notch also, had the heatshield in a week of order placement and all emails were returned promptly

Re: BlinkTek heatshiel, What a piece of

Whether it works or not, $90 bucks for just a heat shield. I don't want to hear shit about R&D on this , it essentially a meta shield with some bends and few bolt holes.

the heat reflection material alone jacks the price up...i think its a very fair price, and it allows us to use alternative filters and intakes without worrying about heat soak, especially if you want the blow off sound from your diverter valve...$150 for the forge splitter with not performance increase, or $140 for the heatshield and cone filter that will create a performance increase and the sound a lot of us are after

I'm not trying to hate on the guy and I can only speak for myself, I've already tallied up the cost of all the materials listed and with one good afternoon, I could make one for a fraction of the price. That said there is a price for convenience and "a dude's gotta eat". I'm just saying though.......

Re: BlinkTek heatshiel, What a piece of

I tried to make my own and it cost me about $42 and it came out OK but is now falling apart a few months later. Could just be me but I took alot of time into making it(1-2 hours) and it looked pretty good but really if I had to do it over I'd just drop the $90 and I probably will when I get the money. It's just a matter of something you make with the possibility of fitment issues, effectiveness and actual build material and quality vs something manufactured with proven results, quality, good fitment, etc. I dont always agree with "Pay nice or pay twice" but this time I want to agree, unless someone is handy enough to make a really good detailed, sturdy, effective one that takes alot of work and time that'll probably end up costing you over $42 plus your time it'll just be worth buying the damn blinktek anyway. It's not like its a difference between $1000 e-codes and $200 e-code reps saving you $800, its a difference of $40-50 and your time and $90. Just my $.02

sometimes its worth paying for the "not having to do it myself" factor which is becoming more and more applicable as i get older...i just dont want to deal with things i used to when i was younger, the reason i run my stock bose after having 4 cars with competition sound systems in them...i just cant tear another car apart

just purchased same shield with an Amsoil filter too. Should be here any day. Ill keep you posted.
I think the convenient factor is worth the price personally, but I live in a city without a garage :( Difference in opinion.

Smile Re: BlinkTek heatshiel, What a piece of

I am the so called... BlinkTek guy, Matt. I dont often have time to post but I was linked to this page by a other user and thought I would chime in. J

To clear a few things up, these shields have been in the making for about 3 years. The first year I didn’t tell anyone as I was looking for better materials and stuff that could with hold to the heat. I tell you what they really have come along way. I made the first one for my car before I was ever a forum member anywhere. Being a guy on a tight budget and not wanting to buy some expensive intake, I decided to use my engineering skills. I made one up and then spent that next year modifying it and fine-tuning it. At first I used a rubber seal from a Honda Civic door seal and hot water heater wrap as insulation. This not only looked bad but it discolored and the glue used melted with in the first month. Back to the drawings boards I went. I made a few changes and the wanted to show off my work to the forums about 3 months later. Lots of people really liked my so called version 2 design. Many people asked me if I would make one for them. I took note of this and started my idea pondering. One year later I was happy with yet another benefited design and offered to sell B5 version shields under a made to order policy. It quickly grew to a list of 40+ people. Granted these were people that were just interested. It too a very long time to make each one as I made them by hand. There was no mass producing and multiple cutting here. The cost to have a bunch cut out by a shop was way over my budget and would drive the cost way up. The rubber was hand cut to mitered corners and material was cut out with razor blades.

Now 2 years later, I still make them by hand, no mass producing going on here!! I have found to what I believe is the best materials for the money but I have to buy in bulk in order to get the price I get and can sell for. The price has only gone up from $80 shipped to $95 shipped in two years The materials are 10 fold better then they used to be.

Am I making profit you ask? Yes is the answer, how much I bet you will be surprised.
Put it this way, you CAN NOT buy just the materials I use to make one shield for anywhere close to what I charge shipped. Materials only for one shield can total around $150-$200. Trust me I will list it out for a single person to make one with my quality materials.

-Alumn sheet .025 - 2’x4’ at a local store ~$40 ( I buy in bulk at 4’x12’ sheets to save on this)
-Reflect-A-Cloth with heat resistive backing min order 5’x5’ square = $110 each ( I buy in 5’x12’ rolls to save on this as well.
-Custom rubber extrusions with steel inner support for ridgity and clamping requiring no glue or clamps, made of heat resistant rubber. Min order of 400 feet, yeah you don’t wanna know the price for 400 feet.

I don’t make these for profit, I make these for other enthusiast that enjoy their car as much as I do. It cost me about $70 each to make and ship to you without subtracting my time after I buy everything in bulk. Do the math, for every 5 I sell I make about $100. That sounds reasonable. But it takes about 5 hours to make 5 shields if I jam on them. So now how much is that really a profit to me. My wife tells me all the time I need to quit spending all my time doing this but hey, its a hobby that I don’t mind helping others out with.

In regards to the mounting of the shields. I have not made mounts for the shields because they were NOT necessary. I designed them to fit snuggly in the engine bay and support them selves. I have recently started to design mounts. Non that are available yet. I will eventually have mounts for all designs as time moves on. I am also trying to find time to update the website with better instructions, better pictures and more options.

I hope that I can clear up any confusion in cost and profit here along with what I am about. Thank You for reading and your time.
    Matt
