I didnt read your link but I took a small/dense/heavy object and a blunt punch into the tank and got it turned... If I had to guess I would say it has to turn 15-20 degrees

    Addition:

It was a short/wide interior prybar that I laid in the groove, and a rock (yup, even at a highend shop we used whatever worked) I finessed it with... It took one well placed/forced blow... You probably wont have access to a plastic pry like that, sorry I couldnt be much help

Re: getting the fuel pump out of the tank

To get mine out I made a tool that fit into the slots. I used some small flat pieces of metal, maybe 1/2" to 1" wide and about a 1/4" thick. I measured and then cut what I though would fit into the slots and then welded the jig. I then welded a long piece of metal to the part that fit onto the basket and turned it with a pair of vice grips. Sounds complicated but it wasnt too bad. I'll try to get a pic of it and post it up.
I do work around the South East on your 1.8t or 2.7t, PM for more info

/\ /\ /\ Without the right tool, getting the pump secured is a real PIA and you can damage your tank. Ask me how I know??? Without the right tool, you have to push down with a lot of force to get the pump secured in the tank and damage can occur to your filler tube seal.

oh wait you said you're already on the basket part. there's some tabs the you have to use a few flathead screwdrivers to push in, then you can lift straight up. use a fluorescent/led to zero in on the tabs that you push in.
