Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Refinished my stock 17s today (Winter set up). Decided to go with a Gunmetal gray color instead of Silver. The wheels came out very nice IMO. Took about 5 hours total from sanding down the wheels to painting.

    Materials used:

    Simple Green
    320 Grit sandpaper
    Tack Cloth
    Dupli-Color prep wipe
    Dupli-Color Primer (FP102)
    Dupli-Color Wheel Coating (HP102) - Graphite

I know a few of you guys have done this with the Dupli-Color wheel paint.

    After sanding:

    Primer:

    2 coats:

    Close Up:

    All four wheels:

I've got the same wheels... Although I curbed one of em pretty good. What do you think the chances are that I could sand em out and make em look sexy?

I did that not too long ago and was VERY impressed at how sandpaper/dremel and new paint can make a "used" wheel look brand spankin new.

    nice job

now just shine up those tires.

very easy. sanding works miracles. if they are really deep, just used a sanding bit on a dremel and smooth it out. works like a charm.

Thanks! I had a few imperfections in my wheels. The sanding took care of most of them. The primer will fill them in. You can also use some bondo to fill in deep gouges and sand it down then paint.

You can't notice 99% of the random scratches, pits, etc I had on the wheels.

I wiped down the wheels after the paint dried with the tack cloth. It took a lot of the roughness away and smoothed it out a bit compared to before. Very slight roughness now.

But any other way to get them even smoother would be good to know.

Looks good I do the following to help as well

I've redone a few sets now including polished lips on my 540i Style 42's. For painting if you can put the rim on a lazy susan or other rotational item it really helps when painting. I slowly spin the rim while keeping a steady spray from the rattle can. This helps put a very even coat on. I also clear coat with Wurth.

Also, the 600 grit is before painting...

Correct, the lazy susan will help. I've painted wheels using a tire balancer before, mainly steelies.

Haha. Yeah, definitely a project worth doing to get your wheels looking new or at the very least much better than what it was before for $30.

Re: A little sandpaper, primer and paint!

painted my avus wheels the same graphite last week and put dunlop winter sport 3d's on them. the paint matches the unpainted lowers really well. probably going to paint my summer rims the same color this winter. 3 coats of graphite and 1 light clear coat.
