I have done several 1.8Ts, but never an AMB motor, I removed the 4 cap screws, I don't believe the 19mm bolt in the center needs to come out, is is press fit on the cranks and need some prying to get off. . Help please.

Re: Doing timing belt, Crank pulley won't come off

Why are you trying to take it off, is the seal leaking? I got both the cam and crank seals in my TB package but didn't use them when doing it. I'll save them for next time.

Use some WD40 or PB Blaster, let it sit and place a piece of wood against it and hit the wood with a hammer.

Re: Doing timing belt, Crank pulley won't come off

The 19mm has to stay on to check the timing marks. When I did a timing belt job for a fellow AZiner, we had to use a deadblow hammer to free the sucker off. Kinda like when a rim stays rusted on the hub...

Like hammering it on toward the motor?

Re: Doing timing belt, Crank pulley won't come off

No reason to pull this pulley off unless the seal is leaking. The only time I've replaced that seal is when I build a new motor....

Likewise, no reason to replace the cam seals unless they are leaking.

If you do take that pulley off you have to replace the big 19mm bolt. Its a one-time-use bolt because it yields upon torquing. You'll need a huge bar that bolts to those 4 bolts for the harmonic balancer in order to brace it and get the torque required to pull the bolt off. That is if you do not have a 1200ft-lb pneumatic impact gun....

Re: Doing timing belt, Crank pulley won't come off

I used a three arm pulley puller, popped off very easily. It was FROZEN on and I tried hammers, PB blaster, etc. They I realized that I was being an idiot and put on the gear puller, which removed it with no problem.

You can get one at Autozone or the like and return it when you're finished. They are like $50. On a different car I have also used a two arm puller with success.

do you guys understand what hes saying? YES you DO have to take the pulley off to get the belt on... and yes basically what people were saying, I pry it a bit but sometimes it bends the metal cover and I have to bend it back

    hope that helped

Yes, put the wood on the edge of the pulley and hit toward the motor.

Re: Doing timing belt, Crank pulley won't come off

Oh, the harmonic balancer and serpentine pulley? Yes. that has to come off. Take the four screws off and hit it with a hammer with a piece of wood between the hammer and the pulley.

I THOUGHT he was talking about the timing belt pulley on the crank.
