    Question waste gate question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so my roommate owns a 2004 SRT-4 neon, and he got his hand on a 5 bar waste gate for nothing. problem is, he has no use for it because he has the exact same thing on his car, so he offered it up to me for like $100. im new to all this turbo stuff, so i have a few questions.

    1. what do our cars have on them stock, (i have a 2001 1.8TQM 170hp)
    2. will i benefit from it?
    3. is 100 dollars a good price for a used waste-gate?
    4. where can i find an aftermarket waste-gate that will actually fit my car?

i apologize ahead of time if this has already been covered, im at work on my break and i really dont have much time to search.
any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    thanks.

    Re: waste gate question

if you want to up your psi, just go with a manual boost controller, they are cheap and dont need to change your internal wastgate. if i am not mistaken you A4 is about 8-10 psi stock. go to the classifieds and spend less than $100 in a MBC (manual boost controller) and set it at 13-15 psi and you`ll be set.

Our K03 wastegates are fine... and since the K03 doesnt make power FOR ITS LIFE, your not really going to see any gains with anything on the stock turbo past a chip

    Re: waste gate question

correct me if i'm wrong but are cars come with an internal wastegate. i'm not sure what the difference is in a 5-bar wastegate but if it's external you will more then likely need to get a new manifold and exhaust housing for you turbo. i would say it would be a pretty big waste of money unless you plan to go big turbo, just put the $100 towards a chip.

    Re: waste gate question

LOL, first off there is no such thing as a 5 bar wastegate. You do understand that 5 bar equals 72.5 psi?

Maybe you meant 5psi wastegate spring or actuator, that or a 5 bar Fuel Pressure Regulator.

That or your friend doesn't have a clue on what he is telling you.

you know i was always under the impression that he knew what he was telling me. but he could be wrong this time. would a 3 bar make more sense.

also i was under the impression that the 2001' s had the K03s turbo in them, producing 11-13 PSI.

in any case i was going to go with a decently cheap new one i saw someone talking about on here. i'll post the link for it later. they have a regular one thats like 38.00 and a 'hybrid' one that they're asking 48.00 for, plus 10.00 for shipping.

like i said i know about [ ] that much about turbo's and all their components, so i think oer the next few weeks im going to be needing a little help. forgive me if i seem out of the loop, because i am.

i could swear in the thread i was looking at the guy was saying that everyone on this message board uses them. worst case scenerio, i pick a different one and spend more money. not a big deal.

Sounds like your talking about a manual boost controller not an actual wg. If you want more boost get a chip, if you try to use a MBC to run as much boost as a chip would give you all you will do is put the car into limp mode.

Yes that is the stock boost level which is right around 0.8 bar.

Brass means they bought the parts from homedepot or pepboys.

im talking abou ttwo entirely differnet things here.

    1. my roommates wastegate that he offered me.
    2. the boost controller that i would go with.

the boost controller im talking about definitely looks like it came fomr home depot or lowes. but they swear by it.

the wastegate is the one that directly connects to your turbo i believe. again, im about as good as a one legged man in an a$$ kicking contest when it comes to identifying parts of a turbo setup. so you'll have to forgive me until i can clarify what exactly he was trying to sell me.

i leave here in about 5 hours. so i will promptly respond as soon as i get home.

thanks again for all the help guys!

Well if you use a MBC (not a good idea for a K03) you do not need to upgrade the actua wastegate/actuator. I ran 26psi on my K03 with the stock wg.

    Re: waste gate question

Just to clear the whol 1 bar, 2 bar thing up. A bar is the atmospheric pressure at sea level on a standard temp day. AKA, 14.7 PSI I gotta see this neon if it had on a 5bar wastegate. ;)

    Re: waste gate question

Yes atmos pressure is 14.7 when the air desnity is equal to sea level, while 1 bar of actual boost is 14.5psi.

For what its worth I ran the brass boost valve on my b5 18t for 2 years with no issues (~13-15 psi)
and my friend ran one on his MK4 GTI at 14 psi.

Best 35 dollar mod for a stock car.

However I would deff recommend chipping it over the boost valve. and dont bother wasting your money on a more expensive MBC the boost valve ones don't look pretty but they work amazing!

    Re: waste gate question

Since you own a 2001, why settle for 13-15psi when the chips out there for your year run at 18-21psi.
