is the s5 getting the 3.0T? i've only heard the opposite... that they prefer to keep the v8 in the s5 as it's a good engine and more of a touring GT than an s4.

although i'd love to see the 3.0T in the s5...

I am not sure what all the big fuss is about stock exhaust. I thought it didn't sound all that great in stock form. I could barely even hear the exhaust inside the cabin. Now, with aftermarket, it's a diff story.

i'm nearly positive it is speculation. i've only seen one off hand mention of the new engine going into a face lifted S5 in 2010, and that was 1 sentence in a write up about the S4. dealership and other places maintain the 4.2 is staying...

Anything to reduce weight, the S5 is much too heavy. The V6 would also be mounted further back so the weight balance would be much better. The only downside would be turbo lag.

K I just want some clearfication here, now is this just speculation or will the 2009 S5 have either a 3.0 boosted or the V8 4.2 to choose from? I ordered my 09 S5 nearly 2 months ago and sometime between Turkey Day and Xmas is when my mind has to be made up on the options I want on the car cuz that's when Audi will be calling me in for a deposit as I've been told. So guess in a few weeks I'll ask if there's any truth to this and if there is guess my head is going to be spinning...

As long as my S5 I ordered 2 months ago comes with the 4.2 ill be happy...anything less than a V8 is rice in my opinion.

No offense but you should research forced induction motors and you'll find that they are not low end "rice".
In the S5 the advantages of a lighter, smaller, high HP V6 would far outweigh any disadvantages. The S5 is much too heavy, especially in the front so making it lighter and moving the engine weight back in the chassis would be very helpful. I like my S5 but I wish it was a more nimble car.

It wouldn't make any sense for Audi to suddenly switch over to the 3.0 with the S5 V8 still in waiting lists a year after introduction (proving that the buyers WANT the V8). Also it's a way to separate the S4 with a 6 cylinder, S5 with an 8 Cylinder and S6 with a 10 Cylinder.

Even though I'm getting the V8 I wouldn't mind the weight savings that comes with the 6.

You're making an assumption about the possibility of a front mount intercooler, its associated plumbing, the weight of the supercharger itself, and any other supplementary accessories.

The Supra is even more potent than the 335i and can hold even more boost, but even still there is no replacement for displacement.

Especially on a heavier car, if you want the feel of a bigger displacement naturally aspirated motor, there is no amount of mods on a small displacement turbo motor that will get you there.

Completely different motoring experience.

3.0T for sure. All this talk about V8 sound and displacement sounds funny coming from Audi fans. I have a s/c Mustang so believe me I am a huge fan of V8 growl...in an American car. Who wants 997 at 8000 rpms to sound like a Vette? The A5 is much more Euro and IMO sounds fine with less cylinders.

BTW...forced induction, valvetrain = replacement for displacement.

yes, this is a done deal

the V6T S5 is...
faster, lighter, better on gas, better handling, better torque/power band

but has worse sound

pretty easy decision, but I love the V8 sound.

my brain says V6T ...my heart says V8

but I'd prefer a V6T if I had a choice.

Ehh different strokes for different folks. I've been playing with turbo 6-cyl cars for many years now (have had 5 Supras of various years, and all the different engines, 7MGTE, 1JZGTE, 2JZGTE, etc..), and specifically set out to get a V8 this time around. An n/a V8 is just different, and those who want it, whether it's for the sound, throttle response, etc, won't find the V6T equivalent, even if it has more power.

If the S5 were V6T, I would have definitely just paid the difference and got an M3.
