Re: turbo swap with motor in trans out???

Is the trans already out? Otherwise, just pull the motor and change the turbos and clutch...seriously, I think it almost takes less time to pull the motor than the trans...I've done both, and the trans was by far the worst...PS, I wouldn't attempt it. Alot of the oil and coolant lines on the turbos are hard to get at with the engine OUT...

Re: turbo swap with motor in trans out???

You can get to them but it's though. There is not enough room for fat hands. Like the guy above said it's doable but it's pretty much easier to pull everything than do the clutch and turbos. It took me about 2 1/2 hours the first time and about two now. If you don't have much wrenching experiance than it will take longer, the biggest pain for me was taking the heatshields off but for someone that it taking everything at once this is not a problem.

It can be done even with the trans in, but it isn't the best way to do it, or fastest. You can lower the subframe and that gives quite a bit of room, but nothing like having the engine out.

edit: you only have to pull the right side downpipe to do a clutch:)

Re: turbo swap with motor in trans out???

The only reason I say the red color my friend ran a 15g on his Volvo. When he sold the turbo the inside of the hotside on the inside was red . He bought the turbo new and only put 2 or 3 thousand miles on it and only the inside was red. Have heard people say that the cause before (we thought it was race gas coming threw the exhaust manifold from running to rich). But I could be wrong!
