how to: boot mode your ecu

this has to be done to read/write some ecus. mine can be flashed over obd in the car. but boot mode on the bench is way faster.

hold a grounded 1k resistor (or paperclip, it works) to the solder pad circled in red for 3-4 seconds when first powering on the ecu.

pictured is 4b0 906 018p ecu. your ecu may be different. click the picture to make it bigger if your browser resizes it.

    contact via email please.

What is the application? ME5? ME7? 2000 is ME5 right? Does doing this enable us to do to our ECMs what you are doing to yours currently (assuming we have the same software and hardware)?

This means he can flash, or alter me7 ecus now. EG: he could probably take any flashed m7 ecu and copy the tune to another me7 ECU... atleast I think

Oh, doing this allows you to flash your ECM without being installed in the car itself...

An EPROM, or Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory, is a type of memory chip that retains its data when its power supply is switched off. In other words, it is non-volatile. It is an array of floating-gate transistors individually programmed by an electronic device that supplies higher voltages than those normally used in digital circuits. Once programmed, an EPROM can be erased only by exposing it to strong ultraviolet light. That UV light usually has a wavelength of 235nm (for optimum erasure time) and belongs to the UVC range of UV light. EPROMs are easily recognizable by the transparent fused quartz window in the top of the package, through which the silicon chip can be seen, and which permits UV light during erasing.

yea. except the last part of your post is a little out of date. eproms havent had uv holes for a while now. thats old skool (mk3 vw). :p

and if you need to google "what is an eprom?" then i dont think this thread is for you.

Indeed, it's been providing quite a bit of laughs. I am so happy to see you tackling this all alone for the most part, keep it up you're making progress each day it seems. I have a feeling though Ian it's all about to go beyond my realm of knowledge at the rate you're progressing.
