remove shifter surround. Pull surround up and over knob. Reveal one time use clamp, remove clamp and slide knob up. Install new knob and replace one time use clamp with zip tie and tighten tight.

    Re: Removing Shift Knob

This is the only post that I could find concerning this topic, so I thought I would bump it up; Could you guys let me know how to swap out my shifter?? The thing is, I have an automatic. I don't have a manual, so it's a lot different.

Hahaha, thanks. I did some more searching, and came across that thread. I had tried the same thing it seems everyone else did... just pulling up on it, but I didn't want to break anything to I stopped. I'll try harder, and let you guys know how it goes.

    Re: Removing Shift Knob

Guys, I need your help once again!!!!!! I finally got the stock shifter off, but the aftermarket one I got won't work, I don't think. I got one without a button... You just have to press down on it, since it's spring-loaded. The thing that I just found out though is that the button on the stock shifter PULLS the shifting "rod" up, instead of pushing it down. Since I got a shifter that does the opposite, does anyone know how I can use it still? If not, then I will have to put the stock one back on... which brings me to my next point. The stock shifter is spring loaded as well, but it's resting position is closed, so I have to stick something inside the shifter to push the button out of the knob, THEN while holding the button out, I have to stick it back on.

Anyway, can someone PLEASE let me know if I can still use the aftermarket shifter I bought, or how to put the stock one back on.

Yeah... that's a big negative... Anyone know how the SPP tip mod works? I found a site that sells them and it suppsedly helps for conditions like mine, but I can't find out what it is, or what it does.

    Re: Removing Shift Knob

No, it's completely aftermarket... I'm at work right now, but I'll try and posta pic later tonight. As I said, it has a spring inside that would normally push down the lever inside the shifter, but since the A4 has to be pulled up, I don't see how the SPP mod would work. I probably spent about 20 minutes last night looking over pics of it, and I can't figure out how it would fix my problem.

It's a retaining clip, use retaining removing clip pliers. When you squeeze the handles they pull the clip apart. It will slide off. It's hard to see from this angle but if you could look below it, it erally has a clip there.

It's so easy, lol. Just didn't pull up hard enough. (turn the plastic clockwise and pull) It's all plastic no metal retaining clip there

I just pulled mine off, chopped the length of the metal tubing by 2 inches or so and twisted on this clean black knob. Took me less than 5 minutes and I like the look of it:

Oh I know, just haven't felt like putting too much $$ into it yet! Getting there. If anyone knows of a GOOD way to refinish interior parts that would be awesome. Seen a few interior spray painting DIYs but nothing that interested me

This happened to me as well. I got the new shift knob. Didn't know it was a pull action but I used the adapter and a screw so I can still use the shifter well I let my room mate use my car and when I went to leave work this morning the shift knob pulled right out. Come to find out when he was putting it in gear yesterday he broke the top part of plastic part of the shifter and now I can't use the shift now I have to use my fingers to left it and get it in gear smh need to replace this part now any one know how to do it and what it's called?
