I wanna go fast! Questions about the blade of turbo.

So i got my GTRS and manifold, and yea...teaser

I'm stoked, and the rest of the parts are coming Monday. While I was inspecting the turbo, I see that the blade looks like this...

Is that normal to have the white crap on it? Just curious... Or the marks on the manifold?

White crap is there for balancing the turbo, it is a reference for a tachometer to pick up a signal of how fast the blade is spinning.

Ahh, understood on the balancing part...Now how does it reference for a tach? Updated with manifold pics too.

Like a timing mark for checking the timing on a old V8. Some shops do the same thing for new cars while in the dyno, they just put a mark on the cam wheel to give them a rpm reading.

I'll have to ask my mechanic/friend, or read a few more articles to comprehend. I think i understand, but I'm not 100%. Thanks Mike, Greg, and Shawn.

As the blade is spinning, each time it makes a revolution that white mark goes past a laser beam...each time the beam is passed is one revolution. The revolutions are counted and calculated.

Re: I wanna go fast! Questions about the blade of turbo.

Yeah, what they said earlier in the thread... optical timing to determine rotational speed. Garrett (or whomever does the balancing) needs to determine the speed they spin it up to for balancing. They balance it at (most likely.. and this is a guess) multiple speeds.

We do similar means for measuring vibration of airfoils. Here is one vendor we work with (he used to head up the NSMS department here at P&W): http://www.agilismeasurementsystems.com/nsms/
A lot of my work the past four years has been in this field. My housemate designs and builds these optical sensors, or probes.

nice photos. the lighting on that turbo is pretty cool.
