In case no one else knows. Southbend now offers a 17 lbs Steel flywheel, they also dropped their retail price for the 17 and 20 down to $399 which is now listed on their site.

Do they have a replaceable friction surface or is it machine shop resurface for these suckers?

No replaceable ring since it is a Billet Steel flywheel. So it is just like their 20 lbs billet steel flywheel but just 3 lbs lighter since most people seem to like the 15 lbs Spec. With the 17 lbs flywheel people should notice less chatter then with a 15 but more chatter then the 20. The 17 should also allow the engine to rev a little easier then the 20.
