Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

Long story short, car died after the WI Kettle Cruise. Now need to replace head assembly. If anyone wants to help or know of a place to get a head assembly, let me know. Also probably going to replace turbos at the same time. So this will be a nice little project for me.

What happened to the heads? Did the timing chain go? I had a bolt loosen in the timing cover and some how end up BEHIND it. It took out the cog gear, the belt and the valves slapped the pistons. I had the heads taken off and replaced the bent intake valves and replaced the exhaust valves. I had a valve job done and had the heads resurfaced and had the Stage 3 stuff installed at the same time.

Thanks Rob for the call. I'll keep in touch on the progress of the tear down. Again, I might need to contact your guy to do the pistons. Thanks.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

    Status Update Pictures:

So far it's been a learning process taking the engine apart. It's kind of fun actually. But right now we are trying to take off the heads without pulling the motor. Discussed with BigBoost (Rob) and he had the same head assembly issue and he resolved it without pulling the motor. So I am going to try it as well.

One question though, does anyone know how to remove the cam gears? I probably need a puller of some sort, but just wondering if anyone knows how to or done it before?

We found out what caused the timing to jump. It was the rubber gormet that holds the oil dip stick to the timing belt cover. I have no idea how it came loose into the timing belt, but it did. So just letting you guys know to check that rubber gormet or you might have to do the same thing I'm doing. LOL.

Also, anyone is more then welcome to stop by if you want to see the process or want to lend a hand.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

Woah, just saw this. Just a loose gromet was the culprit huh? Serious bummer!

I hope you get this all resolved soon. Good luck.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

Yeah, just waiting on gettting the audi headbolt tool. Once I get that, I can seperate the heads from the block. It's a slow process due to not having time to really work on it, but it's a great learning experience.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

Yeah, driving the wifey's car around is OK. But I do miss the manual and the stage 2 power. LOL. Also taking my time and since I have everything apart, I'm going to try and replace everything that I can since it's apart.

Again, anyone is more then welcome to stop by and check the status of the car. I typically try to get in a couple of hours to work on it on the weekends. So anyone is more then welcome to stop by.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

Just giving you guys an update since I haven't been posting lately.

Got the motor and trans out this past weekend. Starting on seperating the trans from the block. Hopefully this weekend get the motor and trans back into the car.

So far the project has been slow but I'm taking my time on it. Will post pics soon.

Slowly but surely getting it up and running again. And for sure it'll be running before the first GTG.

Car is running!!!!! Now I have to figure out why I'm only boosting 6lbs. Anyone want to stop by with a VAG to scan and check for boost leaks? I'll provide the drinks of choice.

    Glad it's finally running though.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

Thanks Jung. The issue with the boost was due to us hooking up the vacum lines wrong on the one-way valve. Once we figured it out, boosted like it was suppose too. Look forward to seeing you out at some of the GTG this year.

Re: Car is in for some major surgery this fall/winter

^^^ You sir are correct. The rubber gormet that holds the oil dip stick to the timing cover came loose and got stuck between the timing belt and car gears. Caused the timing to jump like three tooths. Which caused the valves to hit the piston. Then the engine went caboom. LOL.
