Whistling noises @ 4,500rpm+

Weather is getting colder, no CEL or anything like that..

was driving around 2nite.. when I heard some wind noises.. turned down the radio and didn't hear it anymore

finally narrowed it down to when the car is accel. beyond 4-5k rpm, i hear whistling / wind noises... sounds like if you left a door slightly open or a window with wind blowing in

car runs fine at least i think.. what could it be ?

i had a similar noise on my 1.8T, does it sound like air is escaping from somewhere?

yea... well it actually sounds exactly like if you open your windows a tiny bit and airs coming though...

i checked the intake just now and it seems fine and tight..... it's definitely coming from up front.. pretty sure it's a small problem but it's one of those things that bug you... like a creaky car thing... sigh

hmm you might want to do a boost leak check, or scan for codes. i just got a fairly large boost leak fixed in a small hose near the top of the engine bay, sounded kinda like how you described it

where would it be leaking from ? is there a way for me to find it ?

i have the same problem and have yet to find a solution, i asked the dealer and they could not replicate it. I've talked with some people who tell me its the PCV and i have yet to look into that because my car is currently at the dealer for an unrelated reason.

Sure it isn't speed dependant and its truely RPM? I used to pick up weird sounds at different speeds and I could get it amplified if I were close to a jersey barrier.

in all seriousness though i had that sound on my first B7 and they said it was the fuel pump (not sure how it could have been)...replaced it...went away for a few weeks...and then came back...then totalled the car...

Do you have the rock chip protection plastic on the mirror housing? My dealer was able to pinpoint that as the problem. Sounds weird I know I didn't believe them at first that a thin piece or chip protect plastic was causing a whistling noise but they temporarily installed another housing and sure enough it was gone. Granted this happened mainly above 50mph and not just @4,500rpm so it may not be the same thing/

did a few more runs today... in first it won't do it... only really when the car is in 2nd or 3rd and up...

i'd do a boost leak check if i were you, look around the DIY sections there are a few different way to do it. i had the exact same problem a week ago and it was a boost leak, completely inaudible in 1st gear but then became louder during 2nd and 3rd...

Seems like a silly question, but are you sure its not your turbo spooling?

Wooo Woooooo!!! LOL, I got a whistle tip from a party store for my rental car the past few days. $3 and it just slips in your tail pipe, sounds like a fan belt at low RPMs and my roommate said it actually sounds like a BT at higher RPMs lol!! I'm thinkin about throwing it on the B7...

i've made a post about this before. at first i thought it had something to do with my pcv as there was oil around my oil cap, changed it out, turned out it wasn't pcv
then the dealer replaced my head gasket twice, not that either
after that my CEL came on, took it to the dealer, it was my DV. got that replaced, the sound was gone for one day but came back the next.
after more than a year of hassle i still haven't figured out what causes the whistle (LOUD)
now i'm getting rid of this hopefully for a e90 m3 :)

is your car chipped? because when i put the car in stock mode no matter how hard i rip it the car won't whistle at all. that's also why the dealer couldn't "replicate" the problem

haha that is the turbo spooling at 18psi with your chip...these threads are getting out of hand...it should be pretty obvious that it is your turbo...and it should be pretty loud...if it only happens over the rpm your turbo should be spooling...it only happens when your turbo is spooling at a high rpm and the dealer cant solve it cuz it doesn't happen in chip mode....how could anything else explain it

yeah it's obviously the turbo, and yes it will get louder if you are chipped. anywho, OP just look on the DIY's on here, there are a few different methods

so it was the fuel pump, hmm i kinda guessed it was something to do with the fuel pump. It seems like all the stupid little problems with my car are related to the fuel pump (cold start problems, high pitched noise, ect)

My 99' Audi A6 Quattro Avant has never had any problems until now. I pulled up to the gas station yesterday after running low on fuel for a day. I made it to the gas station, filled up completely and tried to drive away, but the Audi wouldn't start up. It turned over fine, but wouldn't catch. At one point after several attempts, it sounded like it was ready to start up, but couldn't make it. This happened to me in my old Nissan Sentra last New Years, the only difference is I was able to drive home and the next morning it wouldn't start up. Does anyone think I'm heading in the right direction in my thought process and could it be anything else? Thanks for any advise.

There should be no whistles at high RPM. If so your hearing the DV bleading off boost. I had the same problem and it was a combo of a blocked air intake and bad DV. Cleaned up the intake and installed the new piston DV and never heard that sound again.

we both installed the new revision DV, both our cars whistled past 5,000 RMS... then i installed a BSR intake and my car stopped whistling.....so i guess that makes sense
