    DIY: B6 Glove Box Bracket

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So here is the Deal on the Glove box DIY
(I have successfully completed this with hand tools poor quality tho)
    Tools
    -Pliers
    -Hack saw
-Drill of some sort, Drill press is best
-At least a Dremal( angle die grinder or Bench grinder)
    -table Vice
-1/16 drill Bit and a Counter set Tip
    -Body Hammers

    Materials
-1/2” X 4.75” Flat steel (found at lowes)
    -4X ½” machine phillips screws

    1. Remove the Glove box door. It is Two metal pegs and a plastic damper piston that slows the doors release.( I did the Glove box Piston Mod too) http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...=glove+box+fix

    2. Saw a piece of flat steel 4.75” long.

    3. Mesure about 1” down and Place in a vice as square as you can. Hammer this into a 90 degree angle.

    4. On the short leg measure a quarter inch and draw a line.

    5. Saw along this line.

    6. Once you trim the small piece off, place the short leg of the bracket into the vice at about 5/16” slightly hammer to form this shape.

    7. Then place the long leg into the vice at about 1” and then about 2.5” hammer slightly into the desired shape. ( the goal is to copy the Contours of the glove box)

    The desired shape

    8. Work with the bracket until it fits nicely on the glove box door.

    9. Once its bent into shape, Sand/Grind the mess out of it to make it smooth and eye pleasing shape.

    10. Once you get your shape drill four holes in the bracket around theses points.

    11. Counter sink the holes
    12. Now Paint
    13. Next attach the bracket to the glove box door, don’t forget to pre drill for screws .
    14. Now reassemble and be happy you don’t have to buy a new door!!

can't wait to put mine in they look great just couldn't figure out where they screw into. Whether I have to somehow remove the broken plastic from inside the box or screw into it.

Home Depot has a bracket that fits the glove box exactly. It's bent at 90 degrees you just have to shape it.

yeah they would be glossy but the flat black is almost a perfect match to the surrounding plastic. thats why i use the paint I do.

Re: DIY: B6 Glove Box Bracket

    Thank you!

I think easier way would be as someone mentioned the 90* brackets at Lowe's/Home Depot. They already have holes and bent so really just shaping, spraying, screwing is it. Disadvantage are sometimes the holes are quite large, but nothing a washer can't help. ;) Good deal, guys!

Pulling the of the glove box cover

So really dumb question. I'm fixing my glove box because the hinge box but I'm having a hell of a time removing the pin in this picture. I can turn the pin but I can't pull it out. Any tips? was it easily removable for you? do i have to put a lot of muscles or something?

    thanks

Sounds like it's going about right. I ended up using a hammer on the pliers to get it out, and it still took a while the first time. Just keep trying and get a little creative if necessary.

well i got one pin out but the second one is really stubborn. are there replacements for these pins that I can pick up at Home Depot or some where? I'm stripping the tip on the second one.

You can only get the replacement pins from Audi Parts. They aren't expensive, I have the part number laying around somewhere if you need it but the Parts Department can look it up too.
To get those pins out you have to pull and wiggle em at the same time. Audi used some kind of thread locking stuff on them when they went in at the factory.

I used a pair of needle nose pliers with a long handles. CardFan has the right idea too but like I said pull and wiggle side to side. The pins are metal and won't break.
As a aside you don't need to get them all the way out to take the Glove Box Cover off. Just enough so it clears both sides of the mount for the cover.

For anyone who is trying to complete the fix, I found that if I went to the OPs photobucket page I was able to find the original photos.

Here is a link http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/h...ket/?start=all, not sure what order the photos need to be in but it seems to help as a reference guide.
