How tunable will the new S4 be?

How tunable do you guys think this 3.0 supercharged engine will be? will it be as tunable as the old 2.7 twin turbo? will it be more worth in hp than the 4.2 not considering the fuel economy?

Superchargers are not as tunable as turbochargers, so it won't be as tunable as the 2.7TT

The 3.0T already has more torque than the 4.2. Im sure they will also come out with smaller pulleys, which will increase boost and power.

i would say new pulley and tuning probably get extra 10-20%

does anyone know what kind of S/C it will use? That's the big question. Depending on how much Audi leaves on the table, pulley/tune can be as much as a 30% gain.

Then if there's a large enough market, look out for aftermarket s/c's, after coolers, heat exchangers etc. hell, if there's enough demand, I'm sure someone will have a turbo kit for it.

Re: How tunable will the new S4 be?

I read somewhere its a Eaton roots style charger. Roots style refers to how the actual boost is created. In this case, you have 2 cork screws that are inter meshed into each other that spin at very high speeds to move air to create the pressure know as boost into the engine.

here is a link i could find on how a roots supercharger works.

    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...icial%26sa%3DG

I know it says images.google but it works. Sorry for the poor site, but its better than nothing. The pics help alot if you have no idea of what i explained.

as for tuning, it wont be as tunable as a b5, but it has alot more options than the 4.2 Any stock FI engine can be tuned for more horsepower. I think this will be the next "modders" car and will replace the b5 in way of tuning.

Guess ill have to start saving. After i get to stage 3

Re: How tunable will the new S4 be?

I think time and the number purchased will tell how far up the tunable list the car goes. I do how ever completely disagree with the less then the. B5 I actull think it has more potential. Here is why

Lets look at a car to compare this with. Now if you have a car like the ford super coupe then that car was a tuning flop almost nothing available and next to nothing done performance wise. I think this is more to do with the fact that the car was very advanced for its time and not many people were ready to TUNE the ECU. So lets go to more modern day.

The supercharged JAG is more in our league. Altho I think the S4 owners are more aggressive with the want for more speed. Hence the 10k for a supercharger and the almost 6k for the turbo upgrade for the b5. So I will also include the 03 cobra.

with the cost of the cars almost nothing exciting is going to come out for the first 3-4 years depending on the mood of the purchaser. But the list for mods is huge

1 you have the plain chip
2 then you have the pullie for the supercharger
3 of corce the exhaust and Dp's
4 then you have the heat exchanger for the supercharger
5 then the actual modification of the supercharger it self
    6 shifters obviously
    7 brakes
8 over time a bigger supercharger
9 fuel system upgrade at some point

So really it is on the same scale as the B5 it is just going to be up to the crowd that buys the car to drive the development of the aftermarket. But mod wise there is just as much on the table as the turbo cars

the supercharger should be an Eaton VTS series. Either the 1320 or the 1640.

Wonder if the possible upgrades for the B8 S4 would be something "similar" to what is possible with the Ford F-150 Lightning. Yeah it's a truck but you get the idea. 700hp at the wheel for that truck after some upgrades from Whipple!

That will be very tricky since the 3.0T features a liquid-to-air intercooler built into the intake manifold. There is a separate portion to feed each head.

interesting point, i never thought of that. i guess time will show, cause i am really looking into getting an s4 at some point, i drove b8 a4 and the interior is very roomy compared to b7 imo.

Roots? Really? I would have thought Audi would move more towards the centrifugal type w/ less power drain and more turbo-like response. Either way, swap out some pulleys, dabble with the ECU and the exhaust/intake, and some extra power will be made. Heck, some high flow heads would be nice too. I'd say it's too early to tell which will make more power - b8 or b5, but ultimately total power depends on the $$$ supply and the strength of the block.

Re: How tunable will the new S4 be?

Apparently, the word is that Audi had two engines being developed for the new S4. One turbocharged and one supercharged. In the end both worked well, but with the economics and the emissions we have today, the supercharged engine had the upper hand. Audi will still use turbos, but for the "bigger" applications when you need 400+ hp.

Reviews of the new S4 have been very favorable. No turbo lag, torque everywhere (curve is similar to that of a turbo engine but of course it's done by the ECU).
