    FYI: B6 Brake Upgrade Guide

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    B5 S4
    Front Rotor: 321x30
Rear Rotor: 256x22 *rear does not fit the B6 hub*

    ****-

    B6 A4 1.8t
    Front Rotor: 288x25
    Rear Rotor: 245x10

    B6 A4 3.0
    Front Rotor: 312x25
    Rear Rotor: 255x12

    B6 S4
    Front Rotor: 345x30
    Rear Rotor: 300x22

    B7 A4
    Front Rotor: 320x30
    Rear Rotor: 288x12

    B7 S4
    Front Rotor: 345x30
    Rear Rotor: 300x20

Here's all the part numbers I have for the S4 brake upgrade...

    8E0 615 125 C: 07 Carrier [x2]
    8E0 615 123 C: Caliper [left]
    8E0 615 124 C: Caliper [right]

    8E0 615 269: spring [x2]
    4D0 698 647: Pin [x2]
    ****-

    Porsche 996 & Porsche Boxter
    Rear Caliper to B6 Front???
Will require custom brackets to mount the caliper to the hub. Will also require custom brake rotors.
can be easily done if purchased as a bolt on kit as through many retailers.

    ****-

    VW Touareg
    FRONT:
1LB - 308x29.5mm rotors with single piston floating caliper, generally should be only on the R5 model. Made by ATE.
1LE - 330x32mm rotors with 2 piston calipers. Usage unknown at this time. Made by Brembo.
1LC - 330x32mm rotors with 3 piston calipers. Was used on V6 and V8 model in North America. Made by Brembo.
1LF - 350x34mm rotors with 3 piston calipers. V10 model. Made by Brembo.

    Rear:
1KE - 314x22 rotors with single piston floating caliper, R5 model. Made by TEVES.
1KQ - 330x28mm rotors with single piston caliper. Usage unknown at this time. Made by Brembo.
1KF - 330x28mm rotors with 2 piston calipers. Believed to be used on V6 and V8 North American models. Made by Brembo.

One other note, each model takes a different set of brake pads. Front calipers will bolt on with use of the correct brake rotor and hardware kit. You can purchase Mercedes ML55 front rotors or B6 S4 front rotors to use with the 350mm front calipers. 330mm front calipers will work with Mercedes C230 Sport rotors with modification.

    Porsche Cayanne

    Front Rotor: 350 mm X 34 mm
    Rear Rotor: 330 mm X 28 mm

Front calipers will bolt on with use of the correct brake rotor and hardware kit. You can purchase Mercedes ML55 front rotors or B6 S4 front rotors to use with the 350mm front calipers.

    ****-

    Footnotes:
*Unless noted otherwise, you will need all parts including backing plates and brake lines along with the actual braking components.
*B7 A4/S4 Calipers bolt up the same as the B6 S4, but the B6 S4 calipers are externally slightly smaller.
    ************************************************** ******

so what are our choices? I am trying to compile a organized guide for the forum of what OEM configurations are available and if they're worth the effort.

does the A8 calipers work for the rear? I searched and all i could find is fitting the rear A8 rotor using A8 carrier with an S4 caliper.

its all very confusing but it seems that all the calipers are the same, but the rotors and brackets are different?

is it possible to use the whole A8 setup?

    Re: Brake Upgrade Guide

I went with B7 A4 (same as B6 S4) carriers, calipers, slotted rotors on my B6 USP Avant. Awesome, simple set up for an agressive street car.

Re: FYI: B6 Brake Upgrade Guide

For those who have wheel clearance issues it is important to note that the B6 S4 and B7 A4/S4 calipers are virtually trhe same. At a glance they look exactly alike but closely, the B7 caliper extends out on the top and bottom and you lose 3-6mm clearance. I know one set of wheels where you would need spacers for sure and there are most likely plenty more.

Here is the pic I was looking for

Do the B6S4 345mm rotors require 18" wheels? Currently have two sets of 17s, and not inclined to buy two new sets.

the issue i have whenever i read these lists is: Do they all, with the exception ofthe one you noted as being unable to fit on the hub, fit on the b6 1.8t? I mean, as an example, if I wanted to upgrade to b6S4 brakes, what ALL would I need?

I'm slowly adding information as I find it, but the ones that do not list any incompatabilities from what i found are a complete bolt on. Assuming you have all the proper pieces...

caliper, caliper carrier(bracket), rotor, backing plate, and brake lines

i think this could be helpful if we could go more in depth,ie to put these on X car you will need ...
it will take the guess work out of doing a factory upgrade and most importantly can help with stupid threads!

What you are talking about is an interchange manual. They are common on muscle cars and American classics. For instance, you can buy books that list what parts you can use from various Ford cars to upgrade a classic Mustang. I would support an interchange manual for Audis, but we'd need a lot of help, and just a few people would have to compile the info, then make one thread to keep things organized. It should be everything available though, not just brakes. And basically, an expanded version of the thread that I posted the link to.

do the calipers, carriers, rotors, backing plates, and brake lines bolt up to the B6 perfectly? I recall there were incompatabilities, but i think that was only for the rear.

i am trying to make this into a guide where you can look towards for exactly what you need to do what. part by part. there is NO guide that i could find that was clear and concise enough.

i do feel that this might as well expand onto all other platforms and become part of a ultimate audi brake upgrade guide.

who has the best deal on Rotors? i'm looking for 2 sets (8 total) rotors. i want Brembo for at least the fronts, if not the backs too. i have a buddy with a stock b6 S4, and i have a B4 A4 but having B5 S4 front brake upgrade.

i would also like front and rear slotted and drilled rotors.. i searched on google, but only fairly quickly, and nothing good came up.. anyone know where i can get these.. i also plan on getting pads, and probably s/s lines.. for both cars as well. just unsure on what pads yet. not sure i want HAWK HPS... but maybe if that's the best...

    Yes.

    Zero issues,

except ya gotta have the right wheels to clear the massive 365mm rotors and 8-piston calipers!

I've been researching this as well and can't find any decent deals out there. Everything for the B6 S4 is expensive. I think that I'm going to pass on the slotted/drilled rotors and go OEM. Genuineaudiparts has them for ~$70 each. And for pads, I read that with the hawk pads the caliper retaining clip does not fit. I'll probably do bobcats.

Probably your best bet. Lots of the S4 guys on AW swear by their OEM rotors in comparison to AM replacements. If I go the S4 route [rather than Stoptech... still on the fence] I'll go w/OEM rotors.

that is because you don't use the retaining clips. they're racing brake pads. they fit VERY VERY tight, and you have to in most cases file down the edges so they slide in correctly.

That's not true, you need anti-rattle clips for S4 brakes or they rattle like hell. They are not tight at all. Another issue is Hawk tends to sell people A6 pads instead of S4 pads and they have different backing clips causing the anti-rattle clips not to fit. I have been through it with them already and have pictures for examples.

they're racing pads...they rattle, squeel, and do all that bad stuff. and you don't use the backing plates. The backing plates on racing pads are built in as well as everything else. these are racing pads, remember that.

and DO NOT!!! use that liquid brake quiet stuff. your brakes will catch on fire.

Hawk HPS pads are performance pads, not racing pads. I've had them on my B5 S4 brakes and I have them now on my B6 S4 brakes. I have never had them squeal. They will rattle on the B6 S4 calipers if you don't use the anti-rattle clips that can be found here: ES#8763 or ES#7851.

There is an issue with some of the HPS pads for the B6 S4 that ECS sells. When I first ordered them they didn't have the pads in stock with the sensor wire that were also compatible with the anti-rattle clip. If you need to order them make sure you verify that they have the correct pads in stock.

Re: FYI: B6 Brake Upgrade Guide

BTW guys, I have B6 S4 calipers and carriers. Gonna do new SS braided lines all around, new and good pads and some new good fluid (guess all from ECS even though I've had bad experiences with them in the past). If I wanted to upgrade the rears also to B6 S4, would I also need to upgrade the master cylinder to S4? I've been told what I have and what I'm getting (rotors, lines, pads, fluid) is all I need for a front upgrade and no new master cyl but if I upgraded the rear also that the master cyl needs upgrading too

I'm going away on business leave, figured between the times I come back I can get the calipers poweder coated black, both front n rear... or not

The B6 S4 master cylinder won't work on our cars. Check the last post in this thread. You should be fine with the stock master cylinder even if you upgrade the rear brakes.

    Thanks Condo!

I'll do some research and chime in here later on when I place my order. I am on a mission. Since I'll be working in Italy for 6 months starting December, I won't have much time to finish up my car's next stage (remember those? ) when I come visit here n there. Need to bang out a lot in one shot without any hiccups cuz it won't be like 'I can fix it next week' since I won't know when I'll be back next lol.

Yes. I have Brembo 355 front and B6 S4 rears and I had no issues. All bolt and go (or stop).

Re: FYI: B6 Brake Upgrade Guide

So am i right in thinking, if I get ANY B7 A4 front calipers and buy the carriers and rotors from ECS I can have a B6/B7 S4 front set up?

    Almost sounds too easy?

There is an issue with some of the HPS pads for the B6 S4 that ECS sells. When I first ordered them they didn't have the pads in stock with the sensor wire that were also compatible with the anti-rattle clip. If you need to order them make sure you verify that they have the correct pads in stock.
Do you happen to know what the correct Hawk part number is for a B6 S4 front application?
I'm undecided what pads to go with. I was looking at the Mintex red box, the PBR Deluxe and Hawks HPS. I want to make sure I can get the correct hawks if I decide to go with them.

Well, apparently, PBR Deluxe are not offered for the B6 S4 fronts. So now it is down to either the hawks that correctly fits the S4 per Condo or the Mintex Red Box.
