    Custom Intake Pipe (Pics)

    Excuse my english, gramer......

All I did was take an existing intake tubing that I had laying around from my jetta. http://weapon-r.com/english/index.ph...oducts_id=5475 < that was the kit I bought. I cut the left end of the main tube (as shown on link) just before the bracket peace that sticks out. The exact length of the tube will differ due to different length of the cone filter ppl use, but the elbow angle of the tube on the left side is near perfect. The only material I bought was a silicone coupler 3"(tube side)-2 1/2"(turbo inlet side). All other parts such as 3"-3" couplers used for my entire custom intake system was re-used from the kit mentioned above, minus the K&N cone filter. Installation should be self explanatory, if you are filmier with the cone air filter install.

In terms of results: quicker turbo spool (I think), sound of spool is more evident inside the car, deeper exhaust note from out side of car and more woosh sound during air intake. Most results are minimal but noticeable. Plus the sexy factor of shiny tube vice black rubber hose.

The only thing I may change will be instead of using regular hose claps, I will use T-Bolt clamps like GSG.

    I love AZ!

LOL, Yea I know. I will have to work on that soon. The metal is difficult cut, I just quickly put something there so I wont warp my filter like I did with my first cone filter setup. What do you think about everything else?

I like the overall idea, and good work for actually doing something on your own. I would personally scrap the metal cover plate. I dont think its necessary and it cant help air flow. Plus it doesnt match the rest of the engine covers. You have a filter on your intake for a reason. If it gets dirty, clean and put it back on. I had a K&N filter on my maxima, just a cone like you have and it was out in the open no problems. I put 20k on it and bought it used.

Did you notice and change in sound, mainly during hard acceleration?

    Re: Custom Intake Pipe (Pics)

did you use silicon or something on the third pic? I noticed a red thing around the coupler... looks pretty good, I guess...just looks too busy for some reason....

The heat shield or that cover looks bad though, what are you using to cut it? At your local hardware store, they sell sheet metal cutters, which would help you cut the metal better, even helps when cutting corners, etc. Pick that up, it will help cut the metal. Once you fix, it will look like money!

seeing this really makes me wonder why the f&#$k I paid $280 for the evoms kit which is not worth the $... yeah it comes with a fancy looking cover, but i could have bought an universal intake kit at pepboys and got same results (minus cover)...

I used vibrant silicon cupler for the turbo inlet, it is red on the inside and blue on the outside. They didn't have black.
Do you think I need that sheet metal on the top? or is the heat shield by the turbo sufice? If I need the cover, I will re-fabricate and paint it matt black.

You should have done more AZ forum surfing. AZ is a great place to start if you have an idea. Personally I gained confidence on doing things on my own vice paying for someone else’s ides with my arm and leg, by reading up on topics that entertain my ideas.

Also get some t-bolt clamps in there, fix that heatshield and you'll be good to go ! You probably should use a slightly smaller pipe as well.

Looks good except for the cover and coupler being too big. Here is my current setup.

Any ideas where I can get uni pipes and couplers for a tip similar to yours?

I'm not sure if I need the ugly sheet metal on top, the shield on the side is a must not only to minimize heat soak, but also to protect your filter from warping from the heat.

I think T-Bolt clamps will resolve the coupler issue.

The couplers are not the wrong size, I just need better clamps.

yes...you would be amazed at how hot that part of the engine compartment gets as it sits directly above the turbo...

that heat shield (as long as it seals against the hood) keeps the intake section VERY cool compared to the rest of the engine compartment....mine has been a dream to have as I can turn the car off and open the hood to find most of my engine is untouchable while my intake is still cool...even the back side of the heat shield is cold while the other side is golden from the turbo heat haha

yes. the colder the air, the better compression ratio, more power, etc.

as you can see, our intake is flawed. its certainly not a "cold" air intake because it's located inside of the engine bay whereas traditional cold air intakes are routed away from the engine bay, usually to the area of the lower part of the front bumper.

so, yes, the heatshield is absolutely necessary.

I still don't get why colder is better.
I mean on a n/a motor I understand the concept, but in a turbo car the air is being sent into a turbo that can glow PINK from the heat.
So wouldn't that mean the more air the better?

^dont know how to really explain it, but it has to do with the break down of heat and oxygen partials and what not...hot air means less oxygen partials...something like that

cold air = better for turbo

hell if i know, just saying what I knew about colder air and how it helps the car...I am sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in...that analogy is a bit extreme, EXTREME hot v MINIMAL cold

but colder air does give you more power...

Colder air/intake charge is always going to make more power, but the turbo's going to compress the air, heating it up in the process whether it be from going through the turbo or the compression itself. That's why CAIs aren't nearly as effective/necessary with forced induction as N/A. The exhaust is way more of an important mod with turbos. A larger/better intercooler is a more important mod on the intake side than a CAI in terms of searching for cooler air. The only reason I would put an intake on a turbo car is if the stock piping is noticeably restrictive....on our cars, the only reason I'd do it is to get a quasi-blow off sound

Ya I got the intake pretty much for sound too, but people hype about cold air way too much for the % of a horse power that it actually delivers.

When air is heated it expands, thus less oxygen Parts per million. In short that is the reason we use COLD AIR intake systems to give us more HP. Intercoolers are a very important part but not the only part. To make a turbo car run efficiently you must have all the key parts. Air Cooling and Flow. One with out the other and the car will never be to its full potential.

Exactly, and IIRC the gain is in the line of 7hp per every 10-11 degrees reduced or somewhere in that range. So some significant gains had be had, especially on a cool winter day I'm pretty sure it's heated when it compresses as well, making it a lose/lose on a hot day.
