Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My B5 steering wheel is showing its age.

Has me thinking if a paddle shifter steering wheel from a B6 or B7 S4 is able to be retrofitted to work.

    Is it possible?

Will the airbag maintain functionality? Can the audio buttons be hooked up to an aftermarket nav? or just the b6/b7?

Re: Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

    It's not a direct fit.
b7 airbag is a double stage type.
b5 one is a single stage type.

You have to slightly modify the wiring to make it work properly.

I don't think it would be a good idea!

I'd go with the R32 setup, the New tt has a hot steering wheel too but its also a DS airbag.

What modifications are done to the wiring? will this effect safety? what are my chances of blowing the airbag?

haha, I just want to know if this is liklely to blow the airbag or not. I'm obviously not looking for a percentage, but if it's very likely I blow it then I'll probly forego the installation.

Re: Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

I talked to a guy who wired up a Dual Stage A8 airbag on a B5 s4 ( +rep audilux for sending me his info).

You're going to need the wiring chart for both the b5 airbag and the B7 airbag. Just splice the harnesses from the B7 to the wires from the B5 (there are twice as many wires for the B7 since it's DS and there are 2 harnesses, so the harnesses must be wired in parallel). This essentially makes the dual stage airbag a single stage. I'm assured that this will not blow the airbag, nor will it trip any airbag codes. The actual functionality of the airbag hasn't been tested, however, because no1 really wants to crash an S4 to test if their airbag works. This was done by two audi techs who say they have every reason to suspect it will work though.

If anyone could post up the wiring diagrams that should help. Don't flame me because I already tried the search.

Re: Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

RS6 is plug and play. No modifications necessary. B6 S4 is fairly easy with harness modification. You need to buy a B5 RS4 airbag harness (available through Audi for $30) and then modify it slightly.

Re: Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

any diagrams for a manual b5 s4? I'm looking to hook up the RNS-E nav from a B7 as well to maintain the steering wheel functions. Anyone have a wiring chart for the multifunction wheel?

Re: Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

You're welcome!!! Also, I'm not positive but the manual B5 S4 just has the yellow connector, no black tiptronic connector. Other than that I think they are the same. The benefit of buying the B5 RS4 Airbag harness is that you don't have to deal with soldering or splicing any connections for the airbag. Just for the horn and I didn't even cut and splice. I just re-pinned the connector. Real easy. If you have a tip, you have to custom make the tip (black connector) harness. But it's easy with the diagram above.

Re: Retrofit of a B6 or B7 Steering wheel?

good looks on the airbag info, should be pretty easy to hook up. Anyone have the multifunction wiring diagram? I'm asuming the colors for the multifunction controls will match up to the wires coming out of an RNS-E nav unit. is that correct?

I was thinking of putting a ultrasuede over wrap on mine to make it a bit thicker. By wrap I mean stitched in, not the wal-mart type ones.
