What competition? The 335 I dont think so....The S4 is priced along with C63(451 hp, E90 M3, ISF. But for some reason it looks nice in yellow since there are no yellow s4 it makes it unique. S4 has always been an S4 color since the B5. If only they could price it at least in Canada 5K over the 335xi I would take it in consideration. The Bmw N54(3.0TT) already has 3 years of aftermarket support. Personally id be happy with a modded 400 hp S4(nicely priced). Even the S5 doesnt smoke anything the only place where they smoke is the design...as for mechanical components,resale value,bang for the buck Audi is in last place

i have always loved audis/vw's, but two days ago i drove a m3 and it was a blast to drive. i am so torn now. the m3 was just a perfect balance of a car. the car i looked at was about 65000. i dont know what i want to ask, but what is everyones opinion of the m3 vs the new s4. i know no one here has really driven the car, but i just cant get the m3 out of my head!

I'm pretty sure the S4 is gonna blow the pants off the 335 in just about every possible way. And if it is for some reason a tiny bit slower, it's still a hell of a lot nicer than a 3 series.

While, I've never driven the new S4 (obviously), I have driven both a stock 335i, and a tuned version (chip), and I can assure you that the new S4 will not blow its doors off. It's rated at 300 hp from the factory, and all dyno tests say that it's underrated.

At the dragstrips, it's turning in 4.8 0 - 60 times. Audi is claiming 5.0 for the six speed.

I do agree that the interior is nicer in the S4 though.

Where it gets really tricky is pricing. In Canada the 335i loaded up quite nicely is somewhere just north of $60K. The old S4 was low to mid 70's depending on options. If the S4 goes up even slightly, there'll be a minimum of $10K difference between the two. I know where my money would go, because at $75K, I can get an M3, or I can save $10K, spend $1500 on a chip, and another $1500 on suspension and call it a day... Audi claims the M3 is NOT the competitor for the S4. If it's not the competitor, it shouldn't be priced the same.

the one i drove was 63000. i just loved how solid it felt on the road. dont get me wrong but i love audis, but the m3 just felt more solid on the road. when i looked at the rs4, they were in the range of 75000. i am not going for a coupe at this time, need four doors.

I totally agree with your assessment (as I think I did in another thread as well). If I can get a C63 or IS-F for low $60's, and an M3 for low $70's (with the options I want), then I can't justify paying more than $60 for the S4.

The problem is the outgoing S4 cost $70+ (again in CDN dollars), and I can't imagine Audi cutting $10K+ of the cost of this car. Having said that, Mercedes was really aggresive in pricing the C63 (I was guessing WAY higher than what it came in at), so maybe Audi will follow suit. Everyone knows they have to undercut the equivalent BMW if they really want to sell. In the case, the S4 better be competitive against the 335i.

The S4 is prettier, has fantastic seats (at least they look awesome), and is rarer (I don't mean exclusive, just less of them on the road... 3 series are like civics these days) so I'll pay the same, but not more than a 335i, and certainly not more than a C63!

However, my point is that the S4 is priced somewhere in the middle of the 335i and the M3 and not that much more expensive then the 335i. I think this is pretty much the same everywhere else. Is there something wrong with the Canadian pricing/importer/dollar?

I think the new one still sounds pretty nice. The 335 lacks drive select, 40:60 Quattro, DSG, rear leg room, etc. But I love the way people like you love to chant on about the 335 when the S4 hasn't even been fully reviewed yet.

Is the price you quoted for the S4 Audi pricing, or guestimate pricing? I think we're all hoping that the S4 slots in where you have it your list, but since North American pricing hasn't been officially released it's hard to say.

The outgoing model was 'worth it' at $70K+ CDN because the old 330i was just over $60K loaded. Given that the S4 had a much more potent engine, and special features associated with 'S' models, you could justify the price difference.

When the 335i was released it was way more car for the money, and was equivalent/better (in terms of performance anyway) than the S4. Most people thought the new S4 was going to go even farther upmarket in terms of power,etc, but what Audi has done is equipped the S4 to compare against the 335i (smart if you ask me), so if they adjust their pricing accordingly, it's quite likely that my e46 M3 could be replaced by one.

One thing that is weird in your pricing is that the M3 coupe is more than an RS4 and significantly more expensive than the 4 door M3. In Canada, the RS4 was well over $90K, but the M3 coupe is priced just a few thousand more than the 4 door version. Actually now that I think about conversion, it's more that the RS4 is super cheap since it's the same price as an ISF. In Caanda the ISF is $63 and the RS4 is/was $90K+.

For me, it's about economics, and with the 335i as the recognized benchmark in sports sedans, I need to use it to illustrate my point. Even if the new S4 is reviewed as an amazing handler, with great features, my math tells me that it still wont be $10K better than a 335i, and definitely not on par with an M3 (horsepower alone kills that comparison... 333 vs. 414).

IF (and it's a big if) Audi prices the car correctly (i.e. to compare against the 335i class), then not only will I not chant about the 335i, I'll probably buy a new S4 (at the very least, it'll be a the top of my list pending a test drive of my own).

From the pricing that i have seen so far it looks like the S4 will be about $10K too much. Im not saying it wont be a great car with perfect handling and interior... im just saying that the entry price relative to the competition is too much. Audi used to be affordable sport\luxury car but I dont see that combo any longer.

Thats why I wont be buying any new audi anytime soon. Ill stick to buy my must have audi's(4000,b5 s4,b6 s4,rs4,quattro coupe).Audi used to be so simple efficient engine,good drivetrain now theyre all about show and sell car due to their styling and interior. Most of the folks forgot about the Audi heritage which is rallying with ugly square quattro coupe. Audi has lost me as a potential(brand new audi owner)let alone the crappy resale value. I dont like the bmw stigma but bang for the buck the 335i or even 335xi are a wiser choice. To the ones praising quattro yes its nice but Bmw has x-drive as well. If its priced way cheaper than the s5. I will get one in 09. Im not into modding like I used to (I could still do a pulley mod in the s4). For the ones thinking that the S are special they are regular cars not even close to being quattro gmbh cars which are M, AMG equivalent. Still M means Marketing and nowadays everything is AMG for mercedes.

The advantage of Audi over BMW has always been superior workmanship and material. Now that they got the handling and engine sorted I just don't see why anyone would want a BMW. B) Seems to understeer much less than the B6/B7.

This thing with suspension/exhaust tweaks will be awesome. B7 RS4 vs B8 S4 is a tough call.

I'm torn because I demand an S4 or RS4 Avant. Since one isn't coming (yet), I'm keeping my B6 S4 Avant. If BMW actually made a 335i or M3 tourer - I may make a jump. But they don't, so I'm sticking with Audi for now.

At the same (or similar) price, I think you've got yourself a solid argument, but I don't think the fit and finish of the S4 is $10K better than the 335i.

I'm not as big into modding these days (like someone said above), but if you are, the 335i becomes even more viable with the turbos. To your point, performance is just one facet of ownership, but it's hard to justify a similar price tag if performance is significantly different (i.e. M3 @ $75K with 414hp vs S4@$7X with 333hp)

Like I said before, I'm not at all bashing the car itself, as it looks like Audi has a great product on their hands (and one that looks to be perfect for my needs). It's the pricing that concerns me.

That said, I agree wholeheartedly with your different strokes for different folks summation. I hope I don't come across as arguing; I actually really like the different points of view. I'm just a car guy that likes to talk cars. Let's hope Audi prices it right, so they can have my business too!

I can see what people are upset about the pricing but as I said earlier the price over here

335i (US$90K) < S4 (US$102K) < M3 (US$138K)

and if the 335i is specced up to a comparable level as the S4 then you can add in another 5-6K. So in the case the difference is quite small betw the 335i and the S4 and quite big betw the S4 and the M3. I believe this is how it should be (not the absolute price but how they are positioned). How the price is determined in Canada I don't know but it just doesn't make sense.

It all comes down to where you live. I wonder why so much spread in prices.Esoteric and I are in the same boat we live in the same country we have 13% taxes crappy financing promotions so 10-15K is a lot more. For the resale Ive seen B6 S4 go for 25-30K and those were sold for 70-75K plus taxes.While same year M3 still go for 45K. I actually like the B8 S4 and would get one but looking at Edmunds 55K USD means...70+ here.
