Why not add a heat reducing coating over the pipes?

    DON"T BUY HEAT WRAP!

It is very dangerous in a street car to run header wrap. Any debris, oil, liquids will imbed into the tape, and not have a place to escape and could cause a fire hazard. Also, moisture gets trapped and eats away at the exhaust.

Spend the xtra $$ and do it right and get them heat-coated at a place like HP Coatings:

Re: what heat wrap to buy for downpipes?

How beneficial is the heat coating compared to just putting the dp's back in with the heat shields?

Also how much approx. would it cost to heat coat both downpipes?

Re: what heat wrap to buy for downpipes?

I have no idea why you want it? Keep the heat down in the engine bay?

I am Stg 3 running FI Widemouths and I have no heat issues at all. Spend the $$ on a set of ER or AWE IC's. That was the best thing I ever did to combat heat. Oil and water temps went down noticeably

Keeping heat in the exhaust DOES keep under hood temperatures lower, but at the same time it helps the turbo's along with combustion.........

just go to a local performance store and buy some, its usually pricey, but at least eveything under your hood won't get cooked.

heat wrap isn't water tight so it can't trap in moisture and corrode your exhaust (which is made out of stainless steel BTW)
as far as catching fire, that sounds like an old wifes tale, the flash point of engine oil is much higher than that temp of that downpipe.

Hey, not my car so be my guest and try it out. I have been there and done that with prior cars and it ain't a good thing for a "daily driver".

Uh.... Engine oil collects gasoline in it, gasoline has a lower flash point than the oil that it's in. You only collect gas in your oil when you're car is running rich, and none of our cars run rich. We like them super lean so we can get good fuel economy

J/k. It can happen though. I've seen DSM's light up because of it, and DSM's have a crap ton of room in their engine bay for air to circulate and fumes to evaporate a lot more than an S4 engine bay.

I can see it being an issue there where you ignore an oil leak, and you are either running rich and/or not changing your oil very often. but I figure hes taken care of timing chain tentioner and camshaft seal leaks if he wants to go out and drop a few hundred on some heat tape.

Re: what heat wrap to buy for downpipes?

If you have piggies then you dont have to worry about heat under the hood. I have piggies without the heatshields and my underhood temps are lower than stock dp's w/shields. About a month ago i ran it hard while racing a 350z...and after 8 races i was able to hold my hand a few inches away from the DP without getting burnt.

Heat wrap has been known to cause more damage than help. Some have used it for a LONG time without any problems. Personally, i wouldnt use it again. I would just use some ceramic based high temp paint and call it a day. The paint probably wont do much, but it wont hurt and its only $5 so you might as well try it while you have to dp's out lol.

    It's a LOT more than $5.

But I see what you're saying MacDaddy, but the possibility is out there that a turbo oil like could leak, or anything. And that's a risk to take when you could just get them ceramic painted.
